Hi, Wondering if anyone has suggestions on how much we might offer a teen babysitter in Hong Kong. The objective is to play with our 7 year old after school rather than really babysit (helper is present, and mom works at home office).
Thanks a ton!

I think $100 an hour would be more than enough for that job. My daughter used to get $500 for a full evenings babysitting, which she thought was brilliant, she would have been happy with $300.

In the States, the going rate is $5 USD/hr (40 HK/hr).

If you're looking at a younger teenager, say 14-15 then $50-60 an hour is fine, if you want an older teenager 16-19, then I don't think you'll find one for that, not when they could get a job elsewhere that pays more.

Well, $5/hour was what I got in the US when I was last babysitting -- almost 20 years ago...

Local teenagers get $20 - $25 per hour for working at retail shops, handing out flyers etc. $30-$50 per hour is the local rate for primary school tutoring. As for expats, part-time job opportunities are limited unless the teenager speaks some Cantonese. Some "teach" English or help at play groups for about $50/hr.

Disagree to a certain extent, My daughter speaks no cantonese and got part time work at 17 teaching drama, and got a lot more than $50 an hour. She also worked this summer aged 29 teaching English for $250 an hour. The cheapest work I've known a teen do was for $45 an hour, plus meals.

It really depends on the age of the "teen". Under 16 have not finished their "O" levels, igcse etc, and their value to the activity/ English schools is substantially less.... and there is an issue of maturity. Not many over 16 are interested in "baby sitting" since English tutoring/ activity schools will pay much more. If one wants to work as a tutor/ activity assistant, then there are loads of expat opportunities but if a teen wants to gain some experience working in typical teen p/t jobs at retail/ business etc, language can be a barrier. For the under 16 .... I don't know anyone even on HK island paying $100/hour; I do know several paying $40-$50/hr for girls aged 15.

A teacher's aide in ESF only makes $117/hr! For playing with a kid when helper & mum are around, $50 is fine. My babysitter was fine with that. Now she's gone to college :(
