Deuter Kid Comfort III

ORIGINAL POST

Finally we have the cooler weather and I feel the urge to get back on the trails again. However, I have a 2 yr old who I'd love to initiate into the hiking life although she is not keen on hills!

Am looking to get a child carrier and the Deuter Kid Comfort III seems to have the best reviews of the available models out there.

The question is, where to find one in HK? Or should I buy online and from whom? Any advice and reviews would be much appreciated.

I don't know anything about the Deuter carrier but we have been very happy hiking with our 2 year old in a Bush Baby we bought at Bumps to Babes. Another carrier I have seen that looks better but has less features than ours is the Macpac.

That is a great carrier, but you probably won't find it in HK. Protrek, which carries Deuter gear, has the Vaude Butterfly Comfort instead. Having tried both the KCIII (borrowed a friend's) and the Vaude BC (own 2x) I would say they are quite comparable. The weight rating (max 20 kg total) is the same and comfort wise for the parent there is no big difference. I have not seen any other carriers besides these two that have a 20kg rating.

Differences as I see them.

- The BC has basic stirrups, which the KCIII does not. Our daughters like to stick their feet in when their legs get tired.

- The KCIII sun/rain shade is smartly integrated in the headrest. The BC one requires a bit of assembly (30 seconds), but once up is a better unit with better rain protection especially. It has two modes: sun (just cover) and rain (wraparound protection). You can also buy a full body rain cover for the BC, though I don't know if ProTrek stocks it.

- The KCIII rain/sun cover straps can hit your kid's face pretty hard if they come loose. This happened to my friend's kid.

- The BC has a better torso support.

- The BC shoulder straps are well designed and comfortable, but the KCIII ones can take a slightly taller child.

- The BC has a very nice neckrest that wraps around.

Protrek has several stores in HK, including Sheung Wan, Wan Chai, Happy Valley...

I've seen it in the shop that sells hiking equipment in Causeway Bay Plaza, can't remember if it's Phase 1 or Phase 2. Let me try to ask around...

Sorry. Now I made you have to go and try both. ;)

The Protrek in HV is on 32 Leighton Road, more or less opposite Leighton Centre. Technically I guess this is actually CWB.

OK, will pop in to Protrek later today, have had a look on their website but they are only showing Vaude and Mapac carriers.

Thanks again!
