CHEAP CASHMERE SWEATERS:

Try Hankow road in Tsim Sha Tsui : some stalls sell them in the evening...

Try a stall held by an older couple on the height of the Chinese lanes (Li Yuen st. i think) in Central

In anycase, make sure you check what you are buiying : i.e. open and check for defaults ( holes / irregulare knitting / stains or discolouration), size (Asian sizing : check the arm length & shoulder size) and smell (some might smell like humidity).

In the Chinese lanes, they'd rather you pay first & open the pack after, but i never had any problem with them exchanging moldy smelling cashemere scarves (never bought their sweaters), as long as you do it on the spot in front of them.

SCOTTISH CASHMERE SWEATERS:

Go to Pedder Buiding (above Shanghai Tang in Pedder Street) : there are quite a few shops selling better quality chinese cashemeers & high quality scottish cashmeers.

They have v. nice stuffs and also original designs, as well as the more classic ones.

You can also buy at Stanley Market where they will allow you to try on before you buy.

Be careful when buying cashmere from markets and lanes, because a lot of times they have labels on them saying "cashmere" when in fact they're only nylon. Be suspicious of vendors selling 100 percent cashmere garments for under $100. There's a little shop on Luard Road in Wan Chai opposite the Southorn Playground which sells really good quality cashmere garments, but expect to pay $500-$1000 for them.

absolutely what shoe girl says.

there are some shops in wanchai and one on pottinger street that are selling what appear to be pretty good quality cashmere sweaters (ann taylor or something of that ilk) for around $350. they come in a variety of colours and sizes.

Another vote for the shop on Luard Road! Also an outlet that's at several locations including Lee Garden Road, Causeway Bay, opp. the side of the old Hennessy Center - called something like Tai Yuen Hong. They have all the Ann Taylor stuff.

To check if the tread os Nylon or natural animal hair, just take one "hair of it", go aside and burn it :

plastic / man-made fibers will melt before burning & smell like burnt platic

natural animal hair will smell like grilled / burnt meat...
