most clubs have kids facilities but Aberdeen Marina Club is the best in that respect. However if you are going to take your friends swimming etc - it really costs quite a bit so be prepared

AMC is nice but it may be the most expensive club in HK.

I know people who are members of the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club and the American Club. They bring their kids all the time and it seems great. Lots of facilities.

Also some gyms like for example the Repulse Bay Club (offers weekday memberships to non-residents) have extensive child facilities with playrooms, video-games, etc...

I second the Aberdeen Marina Club although I am not sure I would if I was paying for it out of my own pocket.

The KCC is a nice family friendly club. Nice atmosphere. Full membership has a long waiting list, but they do term subscribers which is for 2 years.

American club has increased their fees and now a lot of their members are moving to AMC. I have been to American one and it has far far worse facilities for kids than AMC. AMC is better by mile, but then i agree, not sure i would be paying out of my own pocket for any of them - all are pretty pricey!

I live in Pokfulam and some people have reccomended Sandy Bay Club (HK university): what do you think?

Thank you

The HKU club down at Sandy Bay is actually a sports club, so if it's purely sports facilities that you are looking for, such as swimming, football/rugby, running track, tennis, gym, etc, then it's quite good. However, if you also want a 'social' club where you can meet other people and your kids can make friends, then I'd suggest one of the other clubs, such as the Cricket Club, or Hong Kong Football Club. Also, as an alternative, the Aberdeen Boat Club is a nice family friendly club, buy it's only small and doesn't have the kind of facilities that the larger clubs have on offer. Basically it's only got a swimming pool, squash court, gym, children's playground, and has a bar and a couple of restaurants, but also has a second club house at Middle Island where you can sail, cannoe etc. It's probably the cheapest club to join and has a very friendly, easy-going atmosphere.

Depends where you live. You need to live reasonably close to a club to be able to enjoy it.

The Clearwater Bay club is the best place to play tennis in Hong Kong, 5 outdoor, 2 indoor courts. It has the most beautiful pool and children's playground. Lots of childrens activities. Stunning views and a lot less pollution! The Marina section has a large grassed area for play. CWB works on a re-saleable debenture system.

HKCC is probably the best on the Island side for young children, nice pool (heated), poolside dining, tennis courts and cricket pitch.

HKYC is more for older children/adults, (no tennis court).

KCC and the USRC in Kowloon are OK, good for older children at KGV and the Australian School, both have tennis courts and pool.

Talk to the membership officers of the clubs and see what they have to offer.

All depends where you live.

I'm a member of the Health Club at the Island Shangri-La hotel in Admiralty, and I'd totally recommend any new expats in HK to check the Club out for memberships. They don't have a tennis court which is a shame, but the outdoor pool is great, and get's great sun most of the day. Also nice sized gym, solarium for those days when the weather isn't so good, and also really nice poolside restaurant. Staff are very friendly and good with kids. They even do yoga by the pool 2 or 3 times a week which is free for members. I've been a member there now for over 3 years and really love it. It's not that well known which means it's not that busy, which is also nice, but I thought I'd share as a club isn't much fun without members!

Hong Kong Cricket Club, HKYC, HKFootball Club would be your best choices unless of course you are prepared to pay for membership to the AMC. Out of the three the HK Football Club has the newest and most modern facilities. The HK Cricket Club is my favourite though especially with young children. There is the Aberdeen Boat Club on Hong Kong island which is the cheapest club to join but it is very small with a very small pool which at week-ends becomes very busy almost uncomfortably so and has very few facilities for children other than an outside playground and in the hot summer months some indoor play facilities are preferable.

Aberdeen Marina Club is a good club but bear in mind that its chief priority seems to make as much profit as possible. There is an upward adjustment of various fees regardless of the economy.

From my personal experience:

AMC - great pool, ice skating rink, bowling, go karts for kids, adventure zone, sponge ball zone - good for kids, not too stuffy but very expensive meals. Many expat families. A little out of the way.

Deepwater Bay GC - pretty exclusive and very reasonable food, pool is small and little bbq area, little child's playground - not as extensive as AMC but friendlier. More local families. South side so really nice location close to the beach.

HKFC - huge gym, workout area, indoor lawn bowling, tennis, more sports oriented. Very Brit, felt very big not as personal. Buffets are pretty reasonable as is snacks by the pitch. Very convenient location with lots of public transport.

HK Cricket Club - Only played tennis there with a member. Great location - close to city but still feel like you're in the country. Staff were generally very friendly.

Chinese Recreation Club - My personal fav. Reasonably cheap food, 2 pools, tennis, kids room, tv room, computer room, gym. Very convenient location, very local. Very kid friendly staff, not stuffy at all. Great opportunity to learn Cantonese too.

HK Country Club - Great location right by the water and Ocean Park. Nice bbq area. Tennis courts and resort pool. Grass field to run around in and kids playground. Staff was a bit formal but not too stuffy.

Try the Ladies Recreation Club ---- if you live nearby in the mid-levels o/wise if you are in Causway Tai Hang area I recommend Indian Recration Club but it has only tennis, batminton & lawn bowing no swimming pool. SCAA (South China Athletic Association) next door I believ has swimming facilities etc.

Good Luck - Save costs do not target Expat Clubs. krips.

The most family friendly and reasonable club must be Aberdeen Boat Club.

You have an intimiate feeling of one big family - everybody is very helpful and nice (not that "too important"attitude which easily can be found around HK) and great kids facilities, pool, playground - several family events throughout the year and not expensive membership/monthly fee. Located on South Side right next to Aberdeen Marina Club

I have concur on that. I can be absent from the club for months on end but as soon as the family walk through the door it's 'Ah Mrs & Mrs XXXX - how are you, long time no see !' The staff have an amazing ability to remember everyone's name.

Also they have middle island and I understand have plans to build it out. Goldmine if they do.

In regards to the Aberdeen Boat Club it is very relaxed casual, agree. However, if you have young children under 8 then the playground is really lovely, however other than sailing for older kids there is very little for them to do. The pool is VERY small and is fine when the club is quiet but on week ends when it's busy it's impossible to get a sun bed and there is no chance of swimming lengths. In the summer the water gets very hot and it's not very pleasant, maybe because it is so small. We try to avoid the ABC at week-ends. As far as I know they don't have membership type for the Summer only, they do have a week day membership though which would be a good bet.

all depends on your budget, or if your husband / partner can secure a debenture through his job, which will reduce the cost greatly. I have been a member of HK football club for 10 years and its great. if you or your other half plays sport and are willign to commit to the fotoball club for 4 years (including training, playing and representing the club) then you may get considered for a sporting membership , which is much cheaper. If neither of you play any sport, its hard to get in, really

Rent a membership. There are firms out there that do this. You pay a monthly premium above the normal subs.
