Does anyone have experience with satellite broadband equipments and set-ups?

I'll be moving from Hong Kong to Dili, East Timor soon and need a reliable and fast internet connection there.

Any shared experience with and/or recommandtions of satellite routers or providers is highly appreciated.

There are at least a couple of satellite DSL providers based in HongKong, so you should check them out before departing.

Do you know if there are any restrictions on the importation of receivers and more importantly TRANSMITTERS into East Timor? Will you need a licence. Do you KNOW there is no high-speed InterNet there already (in your area)? Few places are not connected these days - even the Falkland Islands.

I live in VietNam where alternate, external communications can cause some excitement with authorities especially when there is a local disturbance. I ended up getting a licence/permit for a TV satellite receiver and persuading nosy police my satellite dish that points in a different direction than most is only for foreign TV!

There are so many criteria, such as where in the satellite footprint you are located, as well as types of receivers, data rates, etc. that a person-to-person meeting with your vendor is necessary.

Setups can range from 'a piece of cake' through challenging [I am a comms technician ;) ]. The positioning of the antenna is also critical and can determine when you set it up, security, weather protection, etc.

Have you thought of contacting any of the international aid agencies in East Timor and asking who their suppliers are?
