Our daughter has just been diagnosed with ADHD. Still in shock, knew there was something wrong but it's Inattentive Type not the 'bouncing off the walls' type which means it was the last thing we expected. Are there any support groups in HK?

My son was diagnosed about 7 years ago now. We did diet, behavioural, read every book going and went to all the talks then put him on drugs. He was a gorgeous, active boy who has grown into a gorgeous yet typical teenager. Once you get over your shock you'll realise that nothing has changed. All that will be easier now is that you'll have a name for something and a better understanding on how to help her.

Try the Child Development Centre near the matilda Hospital on the Peak. They are very very supportive and great for practical coping strategies. Tel: 2849 6138 and ask to speak to Ann.

May I ask how your child was diagnosed as having ADHD? I dont know if my son has the exact symptoms but what I do know is, he has problems with concentration and focus. He may be only 5 but there is definitely a problem there.

salepepe,
I have replied as a message to your in box and I was not sure what info I could pass on as regards the open forum.
Well, others are keen to see my reply .........
'.........................ADHD is a huge spectrum see www.chadd.org for definitions.
We used Therapy Associates who did a psychoeducational assessment. Not cheap at $15k but at least we have a diagnosis and something to work on. See www.talhk.com.
Your son is only 5, presumably Year 1? In hindsight it did start to show then but it is only this academic year she has been having difficulty.
Kindest regards, and best of luck.

Thought I wasn't allowed to recommend particular organisations?

If you wish you can have a proper assessment for your child at the CDC (Child Development Centre) and they will give you a diagnosis such as "language development delay" or "ADHD" or "autism" or something like that. And they will give you a detailed report including recommendations of what to do to help your child in various areas.

Thank you Boo1 and everyone else for yr replies.
My next question is, what happens after the diagnosis. What kind of measures does one take after you're told that your child has some form of ADHD? Is there any medication involved?

Well, I'm in that process now. The report does come with recommendations, in our case for both home and school, to organise strategies in both environments to help our daughter to concentrate. I'm discussing with school the best way forward, i.e. sitting her at the front of the class, continual check-ins from the teacher, whether we employ an EA to assist my daughter maintain her focus in class.
Yes, there are drugs available although the long term side effects make these unsuitable, in my mind, for those with mild disfunctionality. They are, however, suited to those whose quality of life improves so much that the consequences of the side effects are negated by the improvement seen in the condition.
It's a learning process for me so, please don't take my word as gospel. I'm no expert, just a mum trying to do her best by her daughter.

My son had ADHD , and we were so reluntant to use medication. We were introduced to Brett scott a Kinesiologist who works at Holistic Central. Over the months we have seen dramatic change in his behaviour, his done wonders for our boy and our family

Thank you boys. What do you mean? What did he do? Physical therapy type things? I hope you will explain!

What cost would be involved in an assessment by CDC? I'm scared to get my child tested because although I know his current school would help him, I'm nervous that future prospective schools will not want to accept him due to his adhd. however, I want to help him too.
