We've been buying Pura Skim and Nestle Skim and Low Fat Milk. After reading the threads about milk, I was wondering what exactly is "milk drink"? If it is reconstituted from powder milk then how can it spoil if not refrigerated?
Also, we are about to sign up for Farm Milk delivery but am wondering if there is any organic fresh milk delivery available? We live in the NT so traveling to the Island to get organic fresh milk is a bit too far.
Thanks in advance for your advice.

As I understand it, "Milk Drink" refers to the fact that it is not 100% milk. Powder has nothing to do with it. All the low-fat milk in HK is milk mixed with water as opposed to just skimmed milk. I have no idea why but it does seem odd.
Oh how I long for some good 2% milk. Almost as tasty as full fat, but just that little bit better for you.

yes and at a third of the price of the 'milk drinks' here...

I get one that says "milk beverage" which made me suspicious at first, but under ingredients it says "whole milk and skimmed milk". Nothing else.
Does it mean it is only milk?
Are they supposed to tell you the real ingredients or they can hide some?

I called Nestle and they said their skimmed and low fat milk drink is comprised of milk solids, emulsifier, water, calcium, and salt. Milk is from cows in China. Some friends in HK insist that all skimmed milk is made this way. But in the US, I believe it's made by merely removing the fat so the end product is still pure milk. I would like to buy only pure milk but is this possible in HK in low fat versions?

Your friends in HK are incorrect. Skimmed milk is made by "skimming", in other words separating the fat. In the olden days the milk would be left sitting for a while. The fat would rise to the top and be skimmed off, hence the word. Nowadays centrifuges are used to achieve the same effect.
Many countries would not allow the milk drinks to even be labeled as as they are in HK. Sure, they say "milk drink", but the labeling definitely leads the customer to thinking it is pure milk.
I have not found any "true" skimmed milk in HK. Maybe there's a market for a home centrifuge... Now there's a thought. ;)

Thanks for the replies everyone! Now, can anyone confirm if Farm Milk skimmed and low fat milk are pure milk or are they also milk drinks? I called them but no clear answer.

Have been drinking Farm Milk for years -- the low fat (2%) and skimmed. Milk always tastes different in different places, due to what the cows eat (probably nothing very good nowadays, no matter where they live), but the Farm Milk tastes pretty OK. If you want to enquire about how it's made, phone them and ask for the general manager. I did during the melamine scare and he was very open and happy to explain things. But I'm pretty certain that the low fat milk is "real" milk, not "milk drink".

Thanks Isola, good to have a recommendation. I did call Farm Milk twice but their answer was unclear. I think I'll sign up with them anyway - gotta be better than what we're drinking now.

how is Pauls UHT skim milk (NOT a milk drink) not 'true' skimmed milk?

Funbobby, some people (myself included) don't rate UHT milk as "real milk". I guess you have to grow up with it, but if you haven't it tastes disgusting.

Well, some people (myself included) realize that UHT is simply a process for sterilizing, as opposed to pasteurizing, milk...the ingredients are the same! I wholly agree that pasteurized milk is light years ahead of UHT in terms of taste, (I grew up on a farm and probably drank 1 litre of pasteurized milk daily for 40 years so I do know the difference lol...) but the fact remains UHT IS 'true' skimmed milk

to add to the confusion, yest. I saw Pauls 'Milk beverage', with the sole ingredients listed as skimmed milk and whole milk...sounds like 1% or 2% to me (the NA term for semi-skimmed)

Hi funbobby - I saw that too today in Wellcome and wondered what it meant. On another thread, someone wrote that milk drink and beverage are the same and used Pauls as the example but she didn't say how she knew that or what it meant. Hmmm....

Sorry, I am a little confused. Is it "Paul's milk beverage" real and good milk or not?
