Water purifier vs watsons/bonaqua water

Just moved to a village house in Sai Kung and just noticed that the water sometimes comes out yellowish (from rust we think) Are water purifiers all that they are cracked up to be (do they really work) or would we be better off with a dispenser? Which would be more economical in the long run.

Also got a baby on the way and have heard stories about water quality affecting them (lead, other metals etc) so quite concerned.

Thanks

Opinions on this subject are typically rather divided but here's mine.

The purifier should in theory take care off all the gunk including lead and other heavy metals. We had one in the US and it made a very noticeable difference in taste, so something was going on.

Without knowing the numbers, I would guess a purifier is the cheapest solution.

With Watson's or other bottled water you are guaranteed (so far as that goes) pure water. With the baby I would personally only use bottled water in HK. My wife even insisted on only Volvic for baby bottles. Better safe than sorry and your baby's brain only gets one chance to develop.

We had bottled water delivered up to about 11 months ago, now use a filter on a tap (the type that goes under the sink), tastes great, better than many of the bottled waters and saves us about $12k a year.

Whichever one they sold in Patsy House in Sai kung at the time, new filters are $500 once a year

while axptguy and i have disagreed on this before, with a newborn in the picture, I would agree with bottled water (at least get the big dispenser jugs)...a filter is only as good as the maintenance habits of its owner...

cd...i would be very careful about waiting 5 months per filter change...in this climate, bacterial growth inside the filter cartridge is a real issue...I would tend to go at most 3 months per...

Thats a lot of water you must go through if it saves you 12k a year! :)

Think I'll go for both just to cover all bases.

Yeh, we were a family of 7, 8 inc the helper, so $1k a month on water deliveries is probably a conservative estimate, plus electricity for boiling water to use for cordials,
