Hi all,
I asked this a while back (before i even moved to HK) but I cant find the old post via the search tool. So here I go again.
I have a 6 year old and a 4 year old and would like to take them hiking. Any suggestions on a good resource to start this (book? web?). Something that shows trails and approximate time and so fourth.
Thanks.

The book "Above the City - Hiking Hong Kong Island" is pretty good.
You should also get the Countryside series hiking map. It can be found at many outdoor equipment stores like ProTrek.

Thanks for the info. Has anyone had experience hiking with young kids? Just curious how it went and if there is something obvious I should watch out for.
Thanks.

Yeah it's no problem really. Our 3 year old walked 2 kilometers on her own. Just watch for dehydration and exhaustion. And motivation. ;)
A carry backpack is a good idea for smaller kids.

this is a good link, with trail reviews, links to afcd and other sites, 'how to get there' info etc...

Wanted to add: Remember sunscreen and insect repellent!

1) Tai Tam Hike - beautiful hike that starts from Park View Apartments upto Tai Tam Reservoir Road. We usually start the day feeding fish at the Wong Chung Reservoir next to Park View Apartments and then hike. Finish off the day with a hearty meal at Stanley
2) Dragon's Back to Shek O - "best short hike in Asia" - Time's Magazine
3) Victoria Peak to Pokfulam - A short 45 minute walk
4) Victoria Peak to Mid Levels - Using the old Peak road, has various offshoots incase you can want to walk a lot
5) Lamma Island Hike - this is my favourite. Start off from Yung Shue Wan and walk till Sok K Wan - beautiful views, beaches, organic herb gardens in the way. Perfect for kids above 4 years.
Have Fun !

Should I also be looking at things like hiking boots for my kids etc? Hats, sunscreen and so fourth are a given. Just wondering if the easy hikes require anything beyond sneakers.

sneakers will be fine on any trail suitable for a 6 year old...IMO people hiking here with $1000+ boots are either posers or just ignorant of the requirements...decent cross trainers are perfectly fine for everything HK trails can throw at you...

Agreed with Bobby. I do wear my hiking boots often (they cost less than 1000 ;) ) but only if I go on the hikes with a bit more treacherous footing. Running shoes or cross trainers are just fine.

Any recommendation on where I can get hiking gear (including boots and I guess some kind of light pants)? Though my kids have sneakers I only have joggers which I only use for jogging and work shoes.
And, for anyone who has taken kids hiking - any trail recommendations? I am in Kowloon but I am happy to go anywhere that I can knock-off in half a day.
Thanks in advance.

Try Protrek. They have stores in Sheung Wan, Wan Chai, etc.. www.protrek.com.hk .
Trail recommendations for kids:
- Dragon's Back.
- Catchwater Repulse Bay->Wong Nai Chun Reservoir.
- Tai Tam Country Park hikes starting at Parkview.
Buy a hiking book to get an idea of trail difficulty.

Thanks AXPT. I grabbed the hiking book recommended earlier in the thread. Its just nice to get info from someone who has done the trail with kids.

Well, my neighbor's kid, who is four, did The Twins. That's a tough hike. Steep as all hell. So don't doubt that your kids can handle it. It's more about motivation than anything else. ;)
