Ok, sure I'm gonna get laughed out of this forum but who cares as leaving anyway;)
Am sooo not a techie person at all, so forgive if this seems a very silly question!
Wish to purchase an iPhone 3G or 3GS in HK but then want to stick in a UK sim card once I move. Is this do-able??
Also wanted to buy a samsung i8910 HD but can't get one:( - and its not a new model as far as I thought...confused as shops offer the i908!
Any help appreciated.

Why not go to the store and ask them to try your SIM? (If the phone is 'locked' you will have to 'jail break' the device ... and void the warranty.
BUT before you put your money down think REPAIR SERVICE given that they have a poor history - they are even taking to the air if recent reports about exploding batteries are to be believed.

Perhaps that Samsung is not offered in HK.
You should be able to use the UK card. AFAIK HK iPhones are unlocked. But as Highway-9 says ask in the store.

HK iPhones are unlocked. I have been able to use mine in the UK with a UK sim card no problem.
Highway 9 - where is this issue on exploding batteries? The only reports I can see on that are on fake phones, not official. Taking into account the popularity of these phone I think the failure rate has been pretty damn impressive and seems Apple offers a worldwide warranty.........
And lastly, the i8910 is not officially offered by Samsung in HK. It is available in places such as Sin Tat on Argyle Street. Only the original WM6 Omnia is available here officially. Samsung may bring them in later this year - I think they overestimated the popularity of the i908!
