Late submission of tax form and summoned to court

I forgot to submit my tax forms and have been summoned to court in February and have been told that im likely to be fined 8000 HKD. Is there anyway round this? I had two fairly big operations in March and April this year. Would they accept a doctors letter to say I have been recovering from surgery as a legitimate reason to forget to submit on time? Any ideas?

[UPDATE] Please note that fee quotes stated in historic postings may be out-of-date.

Generally, unless you have filed the tax return within the prescribed time period, the Court will likely form the view that you have failed to comply with the relevant law. Usually the fine would range from HK$2,000 to HK$4,000 but all depends on the circumstances. We can assist in attending the summons on your behalf and put forward your position. Our fees are HK$1,000 to HK$2,000.
