I have a dilemma. People have been asking me if people from China are chinese, people from Japan are japanese, USA are americans, what do you call people from Hong Kong?
It cant be h*nkies because it is an offensive slang term.

The official term is "Honkanese".
Well, for me it's official.

That may be official but I think most people say "Hong Kongers".
Also the Chinese, as I understand it, see themselves as Chinese by ethnicity, not by nationality. So they are "Chinese" or "Hong Kongers" depending on context while a guy from Shanghai would be "Chinese" or "Mainlander", at least seen "from here".

Hong Kongers is the normal term. And yes as axptguy says locals will refer to themselves as Hong Kong Chinese or just Chinese. Quite a lot do make sure you are aware they are from HK!

i usually use hong konger, but what's wrong with honkies?
nobody in their sane mind will mix them up with the honky tonk people, is it?

Well, two concepts at play here: the first one has to do with ethnicity. In that case, "Chinese" is used to mean "Han" - the vast majority of the Chinese population. The other has to do with nationality: as in "Chinese national" (citizenship). A certain segment of the Hong Kong population do not consider themselves "Chinese" at all. For cultural, social or political reasons, they prefer the term "Hong Konger." Hence you sometimes come across the term "China and Hong Kong..." The term "Hong Kong Chinese" is a compromise in a certain sense. Nevertheless, Hong Kongers carry a passport that states they ARE Chinese citizens!

Like spurtio all the Hong Kong Chinese in my office call themselves HongKongese. In fact a couple do not like to be called Chinese as they carry British passports because they were born here during the British rule althought they are indeed Chinese by ethnicity.

"Lots dont like to be identified with the mainland in that way. I think that sentiment will disappear though"
I think that will be a decades long process.
