Swedish Snus

ORIGINAL POST

As HK Customs have informed him one is not supposed to bring it in, a friend coming over asks if he'll be able to buy a couple of tins here and I haven't a clue. I've asked in a couple of smoke-shops for this mouth tobacco and they looked at me as if I had two heads and was after heroin. Any suggestions? (I know, apart from telling him it's bad for him and to do without it during his stay!) ;)

I'm sure you will be able to bring some in with the luggage. The legality is another thing though. I mean, he should probably report it. Then again I doubt it is encompassed by specific regulations. So I guess it is a grey area.

Ironically, snus is way safer than smoking. In Sweden, they have even had to tone down the warning labels since, try as they might, they haven't been able to find a link to mouth cancer or anything else! Good luck convincing the local authorities of this though.

Well there you go. You just can't.

I find it a bit odd since smokeless tobacco, and especially snus, is immensely less harmful than cigarettes, especially for the people around the user. Then again I can understand the unwillingness to create more nuanced regulation for something with only a tiny local market.

Hi.

While I´m sure snus is not especially good for you, it´s just too good to resist.

When I last came from Sweden to HK I brought loads of snus in my checked luggage. No problem there.

As I ran out, after a much too short period, I decided to order online. I reccomend that to anyone in need, I had no problem ordering from swedishsnus.com. the cheapest site I found, delivered in 3 working days, envelope with 10 cans straight to my mailbox. Pretty sweet.

The customs officers wouldn´t know what an envelope labeled swedish snus carries, even less would they take time to look I figure.

The ban on smokeless tobacco in HK I think has to do with the fact that many mainland cities are covered in spit, from people doing dirty chewing tobacco. Snus however is something that doesn´t make you spit, and doesn´t affect anyone around you except for my girlfriend who hates it.

Rather oddly, this isn't really true. Any number of Swedish athletes at the national level are users. You'd think if it decreased performance they wouldn't use it.

Not using it is probably better than using it of course. ;)

"I think that quite a few of them drink, too."

I doubt they drink a lot. Alcohol really affects performance.

And yes, Patrik Sjöberg was a bit of an oddity. However he was hardly a marathon runner. High jump is not a highly aerobic sport.

watea101, big thanks! I ordered online as you suggested and the snus arrived in the post on the very day my friend flew in to HK. It has also worked out heaps cheaper than him getting it in Britain so he's very happy.
