I need to find a shop (ideally on HK island) that can give advice on aquariums/buying fish for a complete novice.

Can anyone recommend a particular shop ...I know there is Fish Street but understand there are a whole load of shops so would be grateful for any individual recomendations (someone also mentioned a place near Causeway Bay - any ideas ??)Thank you

It depends what kind of fish/aquarium do you have in mind? Saltwater or Freshwater, etc.

The little girl this is for would ideally like clown fish (Nemo!) so trying to find a shop who sells them and can offer advice on aquarium size /feeding etc

There is a good shop on Peng chau island, only open weekends though, he speaks very good English and keeps his fish in very clean conditions, so less likely to die, We have had clown fishes from there, they are tropical freshwater fish, if you are a novice you really need good advice, and need to know which fish will live peacefully together, and know how to keep water in tank in good condition. Also it would be a good idea to set up your tank for at least two weeks with just water in it, and the pumps and filters ( heater if you want a Nemo which is tropical)going to condition the water before you even put fish in. Best to google articles on fish keeping, then you are more likely to keep them for a long time.

I have had some fishes fron Wan Chai, but they have been diseased and killed each other off very quickly.

It's a bit hard to find aquarium shops that has people who can communicate good english. Even in the fish street, some can but still hard for them to explain.

I use youtube when starting up an aquarium last year (freshwater though). I am planning to start saltwater by the end of the year and I found some good videos in youtube (you can see how the experts do it).

Hi Ogiepogi, Fish are lovely to keep when you know how, I find them beautiful to watch, and enjoy watching them grow. It took a bit of trial and error and a lot of learning to set up our first successful aquarium, in the end we got a Bio filtration system( Juwel a German make), and that was great, for freshwater fish, I intend to set up a saltwater tank too, but not till we move to Spain permanently, as then we can have different kinds of fish, so while I am still here I'll also do the research on Saltwater fishes, so I'll have a look on Youtube.

Agree with that. Lots of trial and error (and lots of fishes were sacrificed). Rookie mistakes, just went on with it without any knowledge or ideas on how to set it up properly. Once I got the hang of it, I bought the nice color freshwater fish "Discus". My "Discus" are with me for 5 months now, got Juwel also as a start but changed to Eclipse now.

Youtube are great because they explain it in videos. It's also better if you join local forums. I joined the local hong kong discus forum. Although it's in chinese, I got some of my friends to help translate it. Local forums are better as the people there are more knowledgeable on the available producsts in HK, waters in HK, fish, shops, etc.

Haven't started looking for HK saltwater forums yet, but one of these days I will. My wife&kids like my discus aquarium, but they are already excited with my plan on saltwater. It's nemo time.

I have an aquarium that I got custom made by Tony's Aquarium on Gordon Street near Tin Hau/Fortress Hill. They don't do tropical fish though, but they are well priced and their fish are healthy, unlike the tiny ones you buy from Fish Street by the bag that tend to die soon after you put them in your tank.

They sell small glass tanks too, service is good, open all week except Tuesdays. I used to have a salt water tank, but for me, freshwater is alot easier to manage.
