Where to Study/Write?

ORIGINAL POST

I am studying for some exams and need a good space to study. I live in Sheung Wan, so the closest library appears to be City Hall, and while I've borrowed books many times, never saw any desks or normal study areas!

Any advice as to good spots? I don't exactly want to sit in a coffee shop all day long but I need to get out of the house to feel normal.

I called the City Hall Library and though they do not have desks per se, they do have tables you could use to study at your convenience.

Hope this helps.

This is a bit of a crazy idea but if you can handle sitting outside, the IFC Terrace level (4th floor/roof) is open to the public and pretty quiet during the day. Not exactly desks but decent tables. I don't know how long you would want to sit there. It depends on how picky you are about having a "real" table. Bring a small cushion as the seats are not that soft.

Don't get too distracted by the view. ;)

Some of the public libraries have a Students' Study Room. You are free to use them during their opening hours, except for the periods when there are school exams. Try the library at Shek Tong Tsui:

Not sure if its the best place the study, but the biggest library is the Central library opposite Victoria Park (between Tin Hau and Causeway Bay)

This library has many floors and caters for a lot, there are study rooms but they are usually for groups and you might have to book. Lots of people but fairly quiet and spacious if you manage to get yourself a good spot.

Check it out and ask the staff for advice. If you are not in a hurry, best way to get there is by the tram.

I agree with abalonely.

The Lockart road library and Shek Tong Tsui library have student study room.

You can study/write (use table and chair) for whole day. No noise,no view to disturb you..There will be many people studying there..so it has great atmosphere for studying.

Central Library (opposite victoria park) DONT have kind of reading room that shek tong tsui or lockart road library have.

The public libraries can be a bit funny - I've been told I could only use their desks if I was using their books. So if you're bringing in outside books, it might be a problem.

You're in Sheung Wan -have you considered HKU? There's a place called the Global Lounge in the Fong SHu Chuen Amenities Centre (you can see exact location on HKU map). They have sofas and some tables there, also a Pacific Coffee. One wall has TVs on, but they're quiet enough that you can work. You might also wander around the campus to some of their eating places, like Olivers or Starbucks - it's perfectly acceptable to sit there for a while and work.

Thanks for all the advice. I tried the 4th floor terrace at IFC today and it was perfect, and should be better when it cools down a bit.

I will try City Hall again - I didn't know where the reading room was but the library website clearly shows a picture of one such area.

Thanks all!

Also, you can get cocktails. I recommend you abstain until you are done for the day. ;)
