Hi our contractor has recommended that we put in an electric instead of a gas heater in our bathroom so this can be hidden. Does anyone know whether this would be more expensive or whether this can affect hot water supply or take longer to heat up? any other pros/cons? We have only used gas and have had no real problems with this.

Is in an on demand heater or a heater with a tank? If the former (gas or electric) there is no time problem as water is heated only when needed.
As for costs, I really don't know. Perhaps your contractor can provide you with figures?

The electric heater can be hidden - say above the ceiling because it doesn't require the same venting that gas ones do. The electric heaters generally heat a 'stored' amount of water. You have to have it turned on for the water to be heated. When you use up the stored water, you will notice an appreciable temp drop. This may not be an issue if you don't use a lot of very hot water at any time.
Gas heaters are generally instantaneous heaters. So as you demand the hot water it is heated. So you can turn on the heater just before you need it, and it will heat as much water as you need. As far as cost, my gut reaction is that the electric would cost more to run as you have to keep heating the tank of water in waiting for use.
So it all depends on your needs. It is an eyesore to have the big heater hanging on the wall of your shower.

There are instantaneous electric heaters as well.

I have electronic water heater in my apartment for 5 years now and never had any issues whatsoever, consumption seem to be low, water is always hot when you need it and if you have an electronic cooking hobs, you can basically skip the gas account ... Gas is old technology, can be even dangerous in case of a minor leak ... The brand I've been using all those years is by a brand called Zanker (made in Germany), I agree with your contractor.

Gas is way nicer to cook with than electric (not "electronic"). It cannot be dismissed as "old tech" since there are plenty of cutting edge gas hobs and water heaters.

During the renovations of our new flat we rearranged the bathroom. We enquired about gas vs electric and was told by our contractor that if you can sort out the venting issue, then gas is preferable. It heats hotter quicker and more volume. For the maid's bathroom which is an interior bathroom he said we could get an electric - no way for hers to vent to outside.
So in our bathroom we ended using part of the existing window as the vent with the heater built right in without having a huge aluminum hose linking the heater to the existing vent hole, since we did not want to drill out a new vent hole. Heater was bought from Town Gas and was the really slim type so it takes up very little space. Temp can go to 48 deg which is really scorching even when it is single digit outside.
As for cooking, especially Chinese style cooking, nothing beats a high heat gas cooker from Town Gas. There is no way an electric hob an generate enough heat for wok frying.
