Motorcycle Parking

I am a new bike owner, and I am a bit worried. My bike, while not expensive, is not exactly cheap either.

Ok so let me understand this correctly:

- Theft is a problem in HK

- Theft is not covered by insurance, so any theft simply counts as a loss. 40k bike stolen? too bad. its gone now.

- Lo Jack does not do motorcycles in HK

- Parking structures are not responsible for damage or theft

- Parking anywhere that would allow you to lock your bike to an object will result in a ticket, such as near a railing.

- You are legally only allowed to park in motorcycle street spaces (which there are too few of), which provide no anchor points for locks.

So we are left with one option, park your bike in plain view on the designated street spaces, only locked to itself. Essentially creating a motorcycle buffet for thieves to pick and choose.

This is how it works in HK? How do you sleep at night?

hmm.. well it depends on your bike now doesnt i?

40k bike can be a 2004 Gsxr 1k.. or a Ducati monster s4... OR can be a new sym. lol..

yea.. unfortunately after I did a lot of reading, the best bet.. is a bike cover, bike lock and a tilt sensor alarm.

You could fit a movement sensitive alarm which will attract attention if anyone tries to hoist it onto the back of a lorry.

I assume your building has no parking. That is the best option of course. If you can make a deal with building management to put it in even a little nook in the parking garage it will save you a lot of hassle. Unfortunately many building management companies are simply annoying when it comes to bikes.

Many car parks allow bikes, and it tends to be quite cheap. For example Wilson Parking's Rumsey Street Carpark takes bikes for $280/month. They have rails to lock to as well.

"I don't think you should worry about bike theft. The biggest problem is damage by other riders who might scratch your bike when they park next to you"

Agreed. Fold your mirrors, use a cover with locks, a disc lock and perhaps a motion sensor.

"- You are legally only allowed to park in motorcycle street spaces (which there are too few of), which provide no anchor points for locks."

Actually some have anchor points. Hopefully this feature will be extended to more spaces.

"- Theft is not covered by insurance, so any theft simply counts as a loss. 40k bike stolen? too bad. its gone now"

Really? I just checked the fine print see now such clause.
