Jobs for expats in HK

ORIGINAL POST

Hi there,

I am a 24 year old New Zealander planning a move to Hong Kong in November. Ideally I don't want to go over before securing a job, which I am finding difficult!

Where do all the expats go for jobs? I am finding it hard as I am not yet fluent in Mandarin or Cantonese.

I have five + years of administrative experience and I will be completing my degree over there through distance learning. My degree is in Human Resource Management & Industrial Relations.

If anyone has any suggestions or knows of any firms hiring, it would be appreciated!

Thanks.

Kate,

What is your plan? How much do you know about Hong Kong?

Hi Woods99,

I am moving as my boyfriend has a job there with a company who is sponsoring him.

I am trying to find a job in administration or HR but if I am unable to find one I will go for 12 months on the Working Holiday Scheme, and hopefully find an organisation to work for during that time.

Based upon my personal experience, it is a lot easier to find work in Hong Kong when you are actually living there. However, maybe try visiting your local Chinatown and try to locate copies of the South China Morning Post and check the classfieds. That will give you a flavour at least.

Wait until you come over here to try and get a job. My degree is HR and IR and had no Chinese language skills but found a job once here. Quite a few companies employ native English speakers in those positions.

Once here go to the NZ Chamber of Commerce and/or Australian Chamber of Commerce drinks nights and network.

Another good networking avenue for me was the monthy Australian Association drinks night. Let people know you are looking for work. Was easy peasy!!!

Good luck with it.

I was in your situation not long ago. It was much easier to search while I was in HK since I think the employers were more willing to call a local number. You can meet with staffing agencies and headhunters who can give you some perspective on the job market and what employers look for. If you google search HR jobs in HK, you can find many different job boards that you can look through to see what's available.

You would have to be an internationally recognised superstar to be offered a job while living outside Hong Kong, or you would have to be head hunted.

I was head hunted by Spencer Stuart for my second stint in Hong Kong, while I was living and working in Sydney. But I had a good, long, track record, was known to Spencer Stuart, and had let them know that I was interested in returned to HKG.

nw,

Really? The firm that placed me are called headhunters, and that is what they are. They do not advertise, they certainly do not place job ads.

Genuine headhunters, like SS, Heidrick Struggles, Boyden, etc, work in a variety of ways. As it happens, SS knew me already, from a previous search.

If they look like headhunters, and work like headhunters, and charge like headhunters, then, guess what?

To mediate this... my understanding is that headhunters often will maintain a database of qualified people in an industry... if a suitable job comes open they will contact those that they have previously approached... they will also of course hunt down other people who fit the bill...

Yes nw .....many people who have been "head hunted" have been placed due to the fact that they were known to the new employer and were very much wanted for their capabilities and expertise in that particular profession......known about by the new employer who was "hunting" for those skills and experience .Searching for an employee generally in the market without having knowledge of the person(s) would be more "general canvassing " .

However, like most people have noted, I found my job when I was in Hong Kong by looking at the job section within the SCMP (south china morning post)
