I have lived in HK all my life and went to Kellett right the way through as have my three siblings. Its a great school, not too big, not too small, good location too. Also, its not part of the ESF (English Schools Foundation) which is going through a political battle right now and is seeing major cost-cutting procedures as it is government funded.

The good thing about Kellett is it is accessible from most parts of the island (schools buses run from most areas). I live in Mid-Levels, but many of the pupils live in Pok Fu Lam, Stanley, Repulse Bay, Shouson Hill - all areas where many expat families choose to live.

What nationality are you/where are you coming from?

By the way reserving a place at HK schools is often very difficult due to waiting lists, so you may want to get your name down quick. I'm not sure about ESF, but classes at Kellett are strictly kept to 22.

Good luck

Re: Discovery Bay

We were thinking of moving there, but next year with Disney

opening and the likelihood of there being a ferry from DB to Disney

you are looking at lots of tourists (mainland) who will possibly rent

some apt on the island on a short term basis. Totally destroying

whatever advantage DB had over Wan Chai TST and CWB

Also, check out www.classmateasia.com. Great school information on this site.

Forgot to comment on the other schools.

Canadian International - i think is very Chinese-Canadian, that's all I know. Montessori, good but very small. Discovery Bay - ESF - not sure if you know but DB is on a separate island. Lots of expats live there but you have to take a 30 min ferry into town, and you can't drive there (as in no cars allowed). The main attraction of DB is the no cars and cheaper living. Australian Int - very aussie but poor location. HKIS - great if you're American, otherwise to be avoided.

On the topic of open space, you'd definetly be better on HK Island, and probably the Peak (v. expensive) or the South Side of the Island where there are beaches etc. Repulse Bay, Deepwater Bay, Stanley.

On the topic of maids, be prepared for either using an agency who charge a large fee for the all the bureaucracy, and provide you with a maid that you've been unable to meet/interview, or do the bureaucracy yourself but have the advantage of meeting/interviewing the maid. This could take several weeks, but during those weeks when you've just arrived in HK if you need an English Nanny I know someone that could help you out. Interested?

Cara - sorry for saying DBIS is ESF - my mistake. Anyhow, lets not pretend that living on DB is a disadvantage as far as transport/location goes. Yes the ferry probably only takes 25 minutes, but you have to walk or get a bus to the ferry (15 minutes), wait for the ferry to load up and leave, get off the ferry at Central and then get to your location from there. If this is say WIS then there is a schoolbus which will take a further 15-20 minutes, but I'm not sure about primary schools - I don't think most of them have buses from the ferry terminal to the school, I'm quite sure Kellet doesn't. Lets not pretend that doing all that is more convenient than walking out of your front door, hopping onto the school bus and arriving at school 25 minutes later (as people in Shouson Hill/Mid-Levels do). DB is nice and more of a western lifestyle than other areas of HK but many who choose not to live there do so because the pro's and con's do not weigh up (in their opinion).

This is really hard to answer as everyone has their favourite schools and ares to live. You really need to look for youself. Personally after sending my kids to International school for 5 1/2 years, we moved them to ESF and they are both much happier. Very happy with Clearwater Bay school (primary), and an excellent standard at KGV (secondary). Also reccommend Clearwater Bay or Sai Kung as a family place to live. Well worth a look.

Hi there. my 2 kids both go to an esf primary - kennedy school which is in pokfulam. its the biggest of the esf schools with 900 kids. pokfulam is a very expat area but you'll really need a car if u want to get into the city. (we live on an outlying island and the kids take a ferry / bus to school). one of the things i like about the school is that my youngest, who is dyslexic, has great support from a very good individual needs section. oh, by the way, children with speech problems will need to see a private therapist (approx hk$700 per hour). good luck

You should look into HK Academy as well, located on Stubbs Rd. Only been open 4 years but have heard good things... Small class sizes and no debentures.
