Bananas, although popular with babies, can be too much for their immature digestive systems so should not be given before they are taking other foods well and coping with more solid food. Perhaps about two - three months after you start. They also can make a baby very constipated which is not a good thing when they are very young.

Good response from Hulda-Annerley Midwives.
Want to add that according to most books, food allergy problems may occur all the way up to 12 months, not just 6. So need to observe the basics of what not to feed before 1 yr. I forget what they are, but all reasonable books list them.

Go with what you feel is right for your baby. The correct age according to the specialists changes every year. When my daughter was a baby it was 3 months, my son started pureed fruit at 6 weeks which seemed to be the norm in Germany at the time, and as he had a intolerance to dairy and soya plus reflux, he actually did better on the thicker consistency of the fruit. By the time I had the next one it was 4 months, then 4 -6 months, now 6 months. Follow your instincts and the signs your baby shows you, i.e. waking in the night after previously sleeping through, needing feeding more often, chewing hands etc.

I started with our baby when he was 4 months but just gave him Heinz baby rice - available in mannings - i made it with formula milk and it was really liquid - he took it pretty well - we stayed with the baby rice and a little banana later on till 6 months - then we got more adventurous - I was very conscious about the WHO saying no solids till 6 months but felt under pressure from family etc..... so far our baby does not seem to have any allergies and now he is nine and a half months and having home made spag bolognese (baby style) today! I got a gift of teh Lorraine Kelly baby recipe book and I would recommned it - although they start feeding all sorts of things already at 4 months, I just started referring to the 4-6 mths recipes when my boy was close to 6 months - now we have generally caught up with the 9 months foods......hope this helps
