I'm new to HK and am wondering if there are any hairdressers in town who can do African-American hair (i.e. relaxers)? Justin Paul used to do my hair but I understand he's back in England. Help!! Will also travel to Tokyo or Seoul if anyone has any leads.

Try Evolution. Emmanuel and his wife are very experienced having both worked a long time in the US (they are French).

The likelyhood of you finding an African American in HK doing hair is about nil sad to say.

I know someone who can braid your hair (she's Af. Am). She might carry hair products or at least give you some leads. If you're willing to travel that far I also have an address in Singapore (used to live there).

You may want to try Chun King Mansion (spelling?) in TST I have heard they sometimes have stylists there to manage african hair.

Did you ever get any responses to this inquiry? I am looking for a stylist in Beijing and I'm trying to decide if I should just get braids prior to my trip.

As someone who''s been in HK for over 12 years, I can tell you it's slim pickin's finding someone to get your hair done right. I never wore braids before coming here, but will either have my hair braided or weaved just so I don't have to deal with it for a couple of months now. When I first got here there was a lady at the Mandarin (I think she's still there) named Fatima who could do a decent wash and set, but as for relaxers, I usually wound up doing them myself. I actually used JP once and while he's a great guy I wasn't THAT impressed with how he did my hair.
There are a couple of African ladies here who specialize in braids and can relax as well, but they're not licensed beauticians (they'll come to your house). I would NOT go wandering aimlessly around Chung King mansions looking for someone to do your hair 'cause Lord only knows if they'll know what they're doing.
As for Beijing, I have a hard time believing you'll be able to find someone easier than here in HK. I'm not real keen on posting my email address here, but will email you the name of the lady who braids my hair if you like.
Sorry to sound so pessimistic, but I've been down this road many times.

I have half afro hair. ie the curl or should I say a lot of curl but not the complete afro type of hair. I use Ian at the firm he is from the Uk and I am very happy with the job he does. He uses great products and can also thin if needed. I would ring him and have a chat he will be very honest with you. I know he can do relaxing etc.... good luck

Could Lady N (email bounced back), Mama Mia or anyone else provide contact details for the experts they mentioned? Particularly interested in people who can come to my house.

I wasn't here for a while so I didn't see your post. I didn't get any message on bvnohk@yahoo.com so there might be a problem !
I you're still interested pls post a mail address here and I'll get back to you.
Cheers.

Hi,
I am new to Bangkok and was wondering if you ladies have recommendations for hair dressers here in bangkok, or perhaps where one might buy a relaxer.
Thanks in advance.

If I recall correctly Paul Gerrard has worked extensively with Afro hair. If there isn't a link already on her then check out www.paulgerrard.com and see his profile under 'staff'.

Thanks Pumpkin. The only problem is they are located in Hong Kong.
