I was just wondering.. I have a friend of mine who is coming too to hong kong. Her salary will be average 15,000 HK$... is that enough for living... like enough for renting a studio and affording a nice living? I appreciate your help guys.

TC, I do not believe from previous threads that The Expat is already here. In any case simple net searches for accommodation rental tells a good story. Other site for groceries prices is www.parknshop.com

For western-style 'nice living', eg 1 or 2 nights out drinking, ditto for dining (say around HK$600 for 2 - just a ball park - can range from $400 - $1500++ for decent places), cinemas (HK$60), and especially the rent (you would not want to flat-share a dump, really, even though that is perfectly achievable), I do not think that kind of salary is sufficient. Hell, I do not think the equivalent of that is anywhere near sufficient for Australia, Canada, USA, UK - the bottom line is that HK can be easily be more expensive than all those places.

Yeah I was wondering too. I guess if she is young enough, just treat it like a working holiday in the UK, living in a bed-sit, saving nothing and not living particularly 'nicely' but it would be an adventure.

Thank you all for your comments. TC, Unfortunately I am still not in Hong Kong either. And I was just asking because simply I wanna check if she is gonna live a decent life or not with such package. As far as i know she is gonna be working in a shipping line as a commercial assistant. She has zero experience. Just a college graduate and they told her it is a training period. And that her salary will be increased when she gets a real assignment. I hope that helps in your comments.

I guess, given her age and experience, that the wage would be OK. She's unlikely to save a huge amount as accommodationa and general living and lifestyle expenses will bite heavily into her wage. Also flying home a few times a year coupled with other travel through Asia will sap her money.

It's kinda hard to say whether she'll be able to live well on that wage. HK can be dirt cheap, or diamaond expensive, just depends on how she wants to live. She can eat at home with food from local markets for a few dollars, or dine out and spend hundreds. That being said, she should be able to get by on her wage.

But, like Nonothing said, it depends on why she's here. If it's to save for a house deposit, well she's going to struggle, but if it's a working holiday adventure gig then she'll love it.

I dont think why she couldnt live a comfortable lifestyle with that wage...I think its all a matter of personal preference. I know many locals who are earning much less then that and are living quite okay. Lunch at a local restaurant only cost about $25-$30 HK dollars, so i think thats quite cheap compare to my average lunch in the US. But if she goes out to LKF for drinks two times a week, that could easily bite into her budget. But the definition of a good lifestyle is all a matter of personal opinion...just my two cent...

Thank you all for the comments. What i heard is that she will get this salary for less than a year. So she wont be a big problem as you guys sayin.

The gaffer... Subways near Lamma Island? Is it easy to go to central? And how long does it take?

TC she is a flight attendant and rarely logs on the internet. And she is moving soon. Plus, I haven't been to Hong Kong yet to answer all these questions. I personally do have a lot of questions to ask.

Back to the subject, They paying her 15,000 annually for her taxes. (13 months per year). Thank you Father of the house for this good info. I personally think 15, 000 is very low, but if it is gonna be only for 6 months, I don't think this would be a problem.

She is Junior Mrs. Miggins.. and no it is a full time job... she is being prepared to be working in a more senior level... so this salary will last only for like 6-8 months according to her own performance at work.

Personally I think $15,000 would be fairly miserable. $25,000 would be comfortable. If they will allow her to work part-time she could easily supplement her income. She should get that in writing first as she would need a side permit and immigration take illegal working very seriously. Make sure her contract is in writing and rock solid. It's not like working in the west.

She is an artist... how much would she expect if she worked for a magazine in the entertainment section... or graphics as a part time job?
