Do you know if they consider sensitive issues as I have to have a heart operation after the birth of my 3rd child and with my husband travelling I don't know what I am going to do for help?

I am doubtful of the chances of success. Immigration laws are pretty standard for all countries these days, and even HK uses the same approach now. The person needs to be either independently able to get an immigration visa (certain professions, business investor etc), or be sponsored by an employer - but the latter will be assessed (quite strictly now) that the person's skillsets are unique and cannot be sourced within the States. Your husband's visa will be this type, and it is easier because for inter-company transfers, the "unique skillset" is experience with the company (and actually the person must be generally be employed for > 12 months). A maid's "unique skillset" will not be viewed in the same way. But I suppose a top-notch immigration lawyer can fix it, but I think the Filipino passport will raise a red flag with US Immigration.

I know someone who just brought their helper back to NY. She is pregnant, but no other "special circumstances". Also, know another family who brought their helper back from Japan. Nothing special there - just one child. Both in the last year. So it isn't impossible!

There is a difference between bringing someone in on a proper work visa, vs bringing someone in on the usual temporary visitor's vida. So knowing that people have been brought across does not mean that was with a proper work visa.

Lilal, I strongly suggest that for your own peace of mind that you speak to a US immigration specialist about this. As much as everyone here is being very helpful, only a specialist will really be able to give you the help that you need and proper advice concerning this. Things differ from case-to-case basis and there might be some mitigating circumstances that a US immigration specialist can use in your case to help you.

In this case, every cent you pay for a good one will be worth it especially because of the situation. Good luck!

Out of interest is it possible to hire a maid in the USA? Basically something similar to HK like a live-in domestic helper? If so what would the wages run to?

Thanks.

I don't get the JLO reference but thanks for resurrecting the thread :)

It is definitely possible, and people do have live-in maids although this is more rare.

Cost depends on where you are. In the Tri-State area around New York a maid is probably about the same as a nanny, so you're looking at US$40000 (around HK$315000) and up per year, less if live-in. And of course she'll work 5 days a week and fewer hours. If in a less expensive area obviously less but still way more than in HK.

J-Lo reference due to her movie "Maid in Manhattan".

You can hire live in helper from Chinatown. Tons of agencies. Around US$1500 + per month. 5-6 days/week. Many of them don't have papers. Some don't stay for long. You can sort all that out by asking to see their Social Security card etc. But they are NOT as hardworking as what you would expect from the HK standard of helpers. Many are from PRC. Best lot from Malaysia.

Worst part of the AGency is that when the know the helper is good, they do call her to headhunt her AWAY from you to the higher bidder. It's not really worth going thru and agency, unless you're really in a pinch.

From experience, my best experience is from self advertising in World Journal Newspaper. For agencies also run similar cards except that they charge your a portion of helper's salary for some kind of gurrantee, which I find is a luck of the draw. I'd rather language my own advertiseM.

There are some Filipina and if you can find their newspaper, then you can advertize. Sorry I cannot tell you where to find their newspaper. I would imagine the large HK style supermarkets will carry them.

Ask around to see who has a Filipina, even if not a helper, eg say a librarian, or a lady walking her dog. Ask for the name of the Filipino Newspaper. And you will get to the Filipino community.

The immigration lawyer name given above is a good lawyer. But don't know if even him can get your helper in.

I should add that if housing is included the wages go way down.
