guess apple's "think differently" is to jump into two market segments that are extremely crowded. nevertheless give us a review Martian if you get your hands on them new products.

I would be interested in what you get for the price, and then see what you get for the same amount of money for a pc (naturally;^)

What price to you put on 'style'? comparing them is like comparing apples to lemons.

Hum, $500 for a box - so we are looking at an $700+ system, plus software and other costs. My mother's recently purchased complete $400 e-machine is looking better all the time! Slap Linux in it (as I believe Mac has done w/ OSX) and the crash and virus worries are resolved, and I am still money ahead! But true it may not look as pretty as the Mac (I assume, haven't seen any pictures) - Edsel was pretty stylish too. To each their own!

Guys, I'm a Mac user myself. I guess this arguement about the speed will go to nowhere unless the PC user 'actually' uses the Mac (not - oh I heard from...). To truly appreciate the Mac.

It has been brisk - warmer today @ 19 & overcast. It has been dipping around 8 on the cold nights.

FYI, I am thinking of renting a pc (naturally) to work through the installation of the various Linux distributions I have - I get 2 Linux dvds per month, so I have lots of Linux software to play with. Don't want to risk trashing my work computer.

Happy mac'ing!

Came across a review of the new mini-mac - and in the spirit of open mindedness, and curiousity decided to look: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/01/13/technology/circuits/13stat.html?pagewanted=2&ei=5090&en=bdeb04fee1270890&ex=1263531600&partner=rssuserland

One line in the review convinced me that this is not the mac for me - "The Mini isn't for gamers, power users or tinkerers, ...." There were several other lines that added to that conviction, but reflect my own concerns and may not apply to those that don't mind .....

Also, I have a choice of dozens of different Linux options available for me with a PC. I only have the Max OSX and (I believe) Yellow Dog Linux if I have a mac - so even there one faces limitations. Darn, seems to be a design flaw? ;^)

Yup, the mac mini is intended for those people who is more of a surfer, emailer and an excel kinda type. CFM is right about getting a G5 if you are a power cruncher. I myself has a Dual CPU G5 2Gb, man, even though this is no longer the latest, it just crunches through anything and everything! Especially on video and huge file size pictures.

Just out of curiosity I did a google search one "hate mac" last night. It seems that there are some folks that hold mac in the same high disdain

Don't count on it Martin! My wife was using her brother-in-law's new mac, and within 30 minutes it spouted smoke, the desktop expanded so that she could not access the control icons around the edges - and the machine died an ignoble death! (I am not kidding - did happen!) I came back from a walk and saw how glum everyone was and asked, what's wrong - did you burn it up??? Whoa!

No problem though, aside from time spent - it was under warranty.

New machine - happens from time to time. My first computer, a STYLISH, POWERFUL, FAST Kaypro II CP/M machine came home, worked for about 12 hours, and died during the night. Took it back, they swapped the motherboard, and it still runs today.

Good! I am glad that (I think) you are happy with your solution!

On the other hand, my mother is happy with her e-Machines PC! No potential memory shortage issues, no harddisk space issues - keyboard, monitor, speakers, mouse included with the price. AND she gets to talk to me when she has the _occasional_ tech support question! Gawd - I would hate to have to try and walk her through the usual operator-error support problems that she presents to me if she had a mac! I couldn't do it! If I was going to provide the support, I would have to switch her to Linux if she wanted something other than a PC!

Can you guess what she would say if I said "try a mac - cough, cough".

CFM, you can buy (and support) a mac for your granny and I will buy and support a PC for my Mom - they have different requirements, and you and I have different support capabilities. We are all four winners that way!

absolutely sucks? that is the biggest crock I have read in a long time! crock! Crock! CROCK! And I am not trying to defend PCs or Microsoft.

My computer works just fine. It sure beats a typewriter. And it sure beats a pen. I can use it to share information with friends and colleagues all over the world - almost instanteously.

Absolutely sucks? It sure beats my CP/M-based Kaypro II from the days when there were more flavours of operating systems than there are flavours of Linux today.

You may dislike windoze, but it sure is much, much better than the OSes that preceeded it. Heck, mac even is better!

Absolutely sucks? No. Not ideal - true. But then neither is mac, linux, or anything else.

But regardless if you want to admit it or not, PC, mac, or whatever, are a real work saver!

It is just that my OS is better than yours!
