conviction and work visa extension

Does anyone have any experience or know of anyone who has got a conviction in HK and the implications that that would have on applying for a work visa extension. Last year I picked up a conviction on my own plea for common assault and I was the absolutely discharged by the judge (means despite the conviction, no penalty was imposed by the judge). I will be applying for an extension in June but I really need to find out now what the likelihood is of this being granted so I can book flights or apply for jobs elsewhere. Any insight would be appreciated.

Cheers

An absolute discharge means just that....on the basis you have no further convictions for the period of typically one year after the sentence, then you have NO RECORD and do not have to disclose your conviction for most purposes. HOWEVER, immigration may be informed of the matter and may take view that, notwithstanding the judge's view, you are unsuitable for Hong Kong. That is unlikely with a proerly presented extension application and the chances are the extension will be based soley on whether your job/presence in the Territory still is in the best interests of Hong Kong

Yhanks Ourwilly. This has taken a load off my mind. I take it that as long as I'm on my best behaviour from now on, this conviction shouldn't have any implications on me when I return to NZ in the future (ie job applications etc)?
