How to straighten hair in humidity?!!!

ORIGINAL POST

Someone please tell me what a white girl is to do with her wavy hair that becomes and absolute disaster zone in HK! I have a lot of hair, but it is fine and my bangs and the sides of my hair are a curly, fluffy mess - totally out of control. My round brush and a blow dryer are not working and I look rediculous. There is no way I can put on a suit and look for a job like this. I assume the best solution would be a hair straightener. Any suggestions on where to buy one that is good quality and won't fry my hair? Thank you for any advice given.

I have the same problem with humidity.... but have been saved by GHD ceramic straightening irons...

www.ghdhair.co.uk or look on ebay.co.uk, they are always for sale there. The GHD (good hair day) after service is really good to. I have been using them for two years and the condition of my hair is still good. wella professional shampoo and conditioner is also good though not sure where you can get that in HK... a salon? The GHD's are about 90 pounds (over $1000) but they heat up in 7 seconds and are worth every penny!!! (plus they will ship overseas).

You mean you straighten your hair by yourself? So does this strightening effect last like a day or what?

Why not try ionic straightening/rebonding etc. Hassle free.

Sally, It is a common problem. Your best solution is to do the ionic straighten but make sure you go somewhere that knows what thay are doing. The GHD straighteners are great if you want a manual device and run HK$1500 here. They are available in HK and I would be happy to help get one for you if you need.

balzac -> straightening hair with ghd's lasts until you next wash it, sometimes when I get up it has gone a bit wavy but a quick straighten over and it's back looking nice...

Ms. Mummy -> I totally agree that using a manual device can be v. time consuming but with these irons you only need to go over the area once. I tried cheaper ceramic 'plated' irons which didn't work v. well at all, and my hair went all fuzzy after being out in the humidity, but these ones are much much better - I went out last night and woke up with my hair still straight, and then today with all the humidity, it's still looking straight.. and y hair is naturally thick and curly and a nightmare.

sallyjoe - if you go for straighteners it's worth buying ghd's, but if you go for the chemical straightening will you let me know the cost, cos I might just do that!

Ghd's are the best - Paul Gerrard sells them and ghd products. I have been using them for two years - no damage! Quick and easy to use.

It's a lot easier if you go to hair salons and let them do it for you. It last for 6 months and your hair looks nice right after you wash it!

Gawain: not that I could think of!

Make sure you find a good salon. It shouldn't cost you more than $1200 now.

Gawain, sure there is. If your hair is completely destroyed from coloring or such treatments then you should not do a ionic straight. Providing the hair is in good condition its fine. You do need to choose a good salon though as I have seen many problems from bad straightenings such as, hair being too flat so not life or elasticity, crimped areas of the hair, breakage and damage from the straiteners being too hot.

dmkk2004, the cost will vary depending on the quality of products the salon uses and the levelof experience of the stylist doing the service.

D-man, I have the same problem, humidity playing havoc with my hair. Should I ask for ionic straightening or is it called by any other name. My hair is very fine and a little damaged ( split ends) from previous coloring so should I go for it or is it better to buy the GHD straightener ? Thanks.

Troy, you could have the straightening done but your stylist need to take things into consideration. For fine hair there are a couple of options to consider depending on the results you want. One thing for sure is you want someone who does not use a very high heat on the straightners. If you hair is a little dry it is not a problem providing your salon uses good products. Ionic straight can also be called Japanese straigth and sometimes called bonding.

If you just want a temp solution and dont mind the labour (as easy as it is) the ghd's are great but get the heat protection oil to go with it to protect your hair.

Troy, I would recamend either Chiga (our Japanese stylist) or Hanna (our Swedish stylist) for the straighten.

Susie, serums are a great finishing product but are not as effective on fine hair.

Tangerine, doing the straighten on colored hair can be an issue but it really depends on the overall condition. I do have serveral clients with bleach and color that have had no problem with the straighten.

As for cost we are not the cheapest for sure. If you want an art director (such as Hanna)( to do the service themself then it will cost you an average of $2000up. If you want a senior stylist (such as Chiga) then you will be looking somewhere from $1200 - $2000 for up to a 5 hour treatment.

A cheaper option would be to have it done by one of our assistants. The assistants are also experienced with the service and are monitored buy a stylist but this can save close to half the cost.

I forgot to mention I will also have an ex T&G Technician joining my team next month who can do these services cheaper than the senior stylists also.

I just want to thank everyone for sending me so many responses. I think I will go with the ion straightening which I've seen in Chinese salons for $300 +. I am a bit apprehensive to visit someone who will not be able to communicate with me, but the price discrepancy between $300 and $2000 also shows that, like at home in Vancouver, T&G charges an arm and a leg for services that can be found in many good salons for much less.

Does anyone know a decent stylist who will do ion straightening for $1000 and under?

Thank you again, really appreciate all of the feedback.

I am a white gal as well and I have fine hair and lots of it. This was a tip given to me that I find works wonders. I used to wash my hair everyday shampoo/conditioner. Now was told dont use the shampoo say only every 2nd or 3rd day. Wash your hair with conditioner only on the other days - no shampoo and alot of the fly away/ will settle down. If I am going out I will use the hair straightener and its the best investment I made, but give the conditioner only a try. I was pleasantly surprised with the results.

I agree. You should only wash your hair every 2-3 days. This will allow the oils in your hair to coat the hair shaft and you'll get fewer frizzies. Also, try Graham Webb's STICK STRAIGHT hair gel (in the lavendar tube). It keeps your style looking great for days! If you have not invested in an Ionic hairdryer and ionic straightening iron, then you should get them. They are much easier on your hair, and your straight blowout will last much longer. Also, make sure your hair is completely dry before you go outside into the humidity. Make sure you get a great haircut. Spend the extra money to go to a good salon. Medium length hair, just past your shoulders, with long layers, tends to work the best. Stay away from blunt haircuts - all one length. That will make your hair go out of control! You may also want to try a cream relaxer for color treated hair. It is less harsh than the regular relaxers. Since you have fine hair, you can experiment with the amount of time you leave the relaxer in your hair. You may want to start out using half the time they recommend on the box. And, check online for websites that ship these items internationlly. You also have another option. Thermal hair straighening from a good salon. This process takes 2+ hours but it is much better that the cream relaxers you do at home. It changes your hair, and it will be completely straight. This technique was discovered in Japan. It's expensive to have done in the US (costing US $400 - $800 per treatment). Touchups may be less expensive. Hope this helps!

I've got thick wavy hair. I'm not too keen to get a permanent straightening done but would be nice occasionally. Is there a hair straigtening gel or product I could use just for one evening. And when I wash my hair out it's gone ? Any suggestions ? Thanks

aiyah! Embrace the curls girls. I have wavy hair at home, but here in Hong Kong I have great curls. I use an antifrizz - John Frieda - that I bring from home. Dare to be different and you will grow to love those curls.

sunwaterandsky - I wish had great curls. My hair is neither straight nor curly. I'll have to set it either way. I do curls sometimes but straight has eluded me. Any suggestions on hair products for straightening ?

I have never tried straightening - does not appeal to me. There are so many local girls with perfect, shiny, straight hair - I can never have that. I enhance the curl and use lots of anti-friz. It is not always perfect, but straight would always be second best compared to the beautiful hair of local girls.

I had mine done in Shenzhen - 188RMB. I love it. My hair was very curly and a mess here. I loved my curls but I could not get a good haircut anywhere and the heat drives me crazy so I now have funky hair and only have to pay 25RMB for each new haircut. I can do so many things with it now.

Sally Joe,

I too havetried straitening at very expensive places unil I found this local place in Wanchai. They do a really good job, but be sure you get only the straigtnening or perming done as their haircuts are awful and dont suit us. The tel no is 2838-3293 and costs around 700 with treatment. This includes a haircut but you can say that you dont want it. Its at 177-179 wanchai road
