with an international licence from the US, I learned that it is not valid if I am staying here for longer then one week. It is only good for tourists. You need to go to the dept. of transport in Admiralty and apply for a HK driver licence. I got my insurance in that building, the prices are pretty competitive

You will need to take a photocopy of your drivers licence (back and front). There is a small phillipina shop downstairs in the same building that has a photocopy machine if you don't have access before you go. It costs $900 for 10 years. Also take a photocopy of your ID card and passport info page (not sure which one you need but take both to be on the safe side). You must show the orginals as well while you are there. It takes a week or so and then you can come back and collect it. Make sure you are lined up in the correct place as there is a special queue for people who are doing the licence "exchange" option. It is located in the building above the Admiralty MTR station - you can take the bridge across from Pacific Place. Hong Kong Licensing Office - 3/F , United Centre, 95 Queensway, Hong Kong. (there are other offices also in Kowloon, Kwung Tong and Sha Tin). Open M - F 9 - 4 and Sat 9 - 11:30.

the most important thing to check re: american driving license here would be to make sure that insurance policy of any car you are driving is still valid if you are using a US licence. Don't want to be paying all that money and then find out if there is an accident/incident that you are not covered because they consider you an unlicensed driver.

Yes agree on kwiksure, have used them for all our insurances for several years and found them to be excellent.

License - Vechicle Registration place in Admiralty, show UK license, fill in form, pay money and you will get a HK license.

At least that was how it was when I got mine, but it has been a while!

As far as I remember, once you go to the Transport dpt, they will do the final driving licence immediately and you will leave with it in your pocket. Now, this was many years when I did it. Things might have change.
