OK, I'm not sure how to approach this problem, but I'm hoping someone out there will be able to help me. Recently when I've tried to turn on my plasma TV during the hours of 6pm and 12am, it will not work, ie no picture, and the standby button keeps flashing red after it's gone green for a few seconds. Why don't I just call out the repairman? Because it works well during the daytime. So I'm baffled. I've read through the instruction manual and all I can gather is that there might be some strong electrical pulse that is interfering. But if this is the case, how am I going to rectify this problem?
Please help.

Hmmm, if you're still covered under warranty, why not call them anyways before the problem has a chance to get worse? If the warranty is expired and you're trying to diagnose this yourself, it would sound strange if no other electrical equipment is being affected by "electrical pulse", which would normally refer to lightening strikes, etc. Hardly the kind of thing that follows a schedule. Perhaps there is a timing lock that has been set, similar to sleep function?

Thanks folks for the feedback. I'll keep you posted. I'll be moving to another location soon and if the problem persists, I'll definitely call the techie out. I just thought it would look a little foolish if they came out and the TV worked when they got here.
To C, the TV worked fine when we first got it. Could it be possible for the timing lock to set in after a few months of usage? Thanks in advance.
To oldhand, everything else does work. Only the plasma seems to weird out at that time.
To Radiodoc, I agree with you. A friend had to get their plasma repaired after warranty and it cost them about $4000. Good grief. But no, we live in quite a modern facility so the voltage isn't likely to be the problem.
To Vertio, I did check the manual. And I tried to follow the instructions but there is no indication of the shutdown period. So I'll move and then see if the problem still persists.
Thanks all.

I'm not an expert, but it's physically impossible for these things to "set themselves"; they are more often than not set by mistake after pressing the wrong buttons, say.
No harm calling someone out, a little embarrassment can save you lots of $$ down the road.
If you provide the make and model #, some folks may have the same model and help you out, also where you are may also make a difference.
Good luck!

As it turns out, they had to take the screen away and I'm waiting to get it back. They said it would take 4-5 days. Is this normal?

I think that would be one of my nightmares to say the least.

beter, do you think that Hitachi might be able to repair other brands of TV? I know that the normal procedure is for consumers to return to the original brand. But I was curious as to whether there are companies out there that might repair a TV which is out of warranty.
I'm quite glad that ours is still under warranty, but now they tell us that we have to wait about 5 more working days. In the meantime, they are going to supply us with another temporary screen while ours is in the workshop.

Just reading this old post, as I'm experiencing the same problem as Karrie. Well kind of.... our plasma has not been working for the past few days, and we experienced the same problem with the flashing light on the "monitor"(not time-specific though). Had the Philips guy come to check (not under warranty) and he charged $500 just for a visit. He said that it was a problem with the power supply and the total damage would come to $4-5,000, and he'd have to take it away with him.
As the price of lcd's have really dropped, we had a good think and thought that it'd be better to buy a brand new lcd. Sorry this is a long story. Anyway.... we chose a 40" lcd yesterday and it's going to be delivered tomorrow. Just to make ourselves feel great tonight, we thought we'd try the Philips one last time to see if it'd work. IT DID!!!!!! WHAT DO WE DO NOW?????
We have no idea why the old plasma is working again, but feel quite sure it'll collapse on us again pretty soon. We can't offer it as a trade-in to Broadway as they know it's faulty. We don't want to give a plasma away for free, given the fact that it's working again. Any ideas?

I have just paid $500 for the Philips repair man to come out to look at our 42"plasma TV which only works for 5 minutes before the pixels start freezing, ending up with a complete blackout after another 5 minutes. For $500 he said this is a common problem with our TV (model 9966 with backlight) and it will cost $4,000 for the parts plus cost of labour. Also, he said Philips no longer manufacture plasma TVs. He also said that whilst it says Philips on the outside it says Samsung on the inside!!!
I came on here to ask how I might dispose of the TV in an environmentally-friendly way but having read the post above I'm bedinning to wonder whether this is a confidence trick pulled by Philips. I certainly wouldn't buy anything else from Philips. When it was bought the TV cost over $10,000 but the price of LCD TVs has dropped such that it doesn't seem to make any sense spending probably more than $5,000 to repair it. I don't thing plasma TVs in themselves are environmentally-friendly as they generate a lot of heat from the screen; ok for cold nights in the UK maybe, but not for hot, sultry nights in Hong Kong.

Hi Hecules,
If you're going to get rid of that screen, would you mind if I took it from you?
I might have a use for some of the internal parts.
Unfortunately, those Philips plasma are notorious for fry-happy power boards. They basically used cheaper sub-standard components which means that they aren't made to last a lot more that 4 or 5 years...
Kind of fun to see modern TVs going bust after just a few years while those remaining 15 year old CRT are still going like trains.
Anyhow, let me know!
Cheers,
Frank.

Philips has said for your Philips 42" TV set 42PF9966/98, thry would offer a special trade-in price pf HK$5,500 for a new 42" LCD IDTV, 42PFL7409D/30, Too good an offer to resist????

5,500 for a new 42" LCD TV is cheap... well at least in HK. Sounds worth it.
Still, if you don't go for it and need to get rid of the broken screen, let me know!
Cheers.
