Wow, that's about all major international schools you can find in HK. Before anyone can give any constructive advice, you first have to let us know why CIS only and/or why are the others out.

If you apply to the ESF school that you are in the catchment area for and it is full you will be offered a place in another one until a place becomes available in your nearest one, if you fall into all the right criteria, i.e. native English speaker.

I agree with the comment on GSIS, a great school for a straight A student, doesn't want the bother with you if you're not. Had 2 kids there for over 2 years, took them out to go to ESF, both are much happier, and achieving better results. GSIS knocked their confidence.

mmpishere: I replied your e-mail (the one you sent me) and left you a number in case you want to find out more about CIS as my daughter has been there for almost 2 years starting in reception. There is no perfect school. You win some you lose some.

I happened to be at Hong Kong Academy last week. I won't send my kid there no matter how good the teachings are. The place is so run-down. I personally don't believe anyone can excel in an environment like that. No comment on its academic quality as I don't know.

Hi,

I just wanted to say that I love everything about HK academy, except that its full and my son can't get a place.

I think its a school that emphasised the love of learning as much as learning for results which I think would be a gift for my children....so different from my school experience.

By the way I am from Australia and my son currently goes to an ESF school and it is far more results driven and intense than his public school in Sydney. This may suit you, they are definitely ahead academically, but it isn't for me, its too full on.

You wouldn't want SIS for the same reason you wouldn't want FIS and GSIS also. The Singapore curriculum is very based on academic achievements.

There's nothing local about the Singapore school...or did I miss something?

From what I have read it seems that FIS is constantly criticised for its academic standards. I having gone to FIS for 10 years certainly understand this however I feel that it truly is the best school in Hong Kong albeit that the secondary school is miles better than the primary. When I arrived at FIS in P3 and I was a very shy child however thanks to me time at FIS I was given the confidence. I often struggled with the workload however i definitely feel that I have benefited as i now have offers to far better universities than the majority of ESF schools. It is hard work but it is certainly not too tough for any student and I have made great friends during my time there. The secondary teachers are amazing unlike any other school. However if you still feel that FIS may be too tough for your child i definitely think that GSIS and CIS are your best options. I hope this helps as often parents only hear what their child wants them too. When I was 7 I would much rather have been playing than learning and I would have told my parents anything. Hope this helps.

I'm not sure if you're aware, but CIS is also quite academically driven - the mandarin standard there is quite high - it's not a more "fun approach" to teaching - you may want to find out some more opinions - but based upon what you state are your objections, I'm not sure that CIS is the right place for you. As an educator, I do feel that proximity to you should be one consideration - I feel bad for students who have to travel over 45 minutes by bus to get to and from school. It would be nice to attend a school where you can drop in and see your child instead of always relying on the bus. Ultimately, your child's experience at school really rides on your ABILITY to be INVOLVED...therefore proximity to where you live can be a key factor. Most international schools in HK are not that different - but the success of each child truly depended on how the parent could get involved. My recommendation? Find a school near where you want to live.

Have you considered Kiangsu and Chekiang Primary School (International Section) ?? They follow the British Curriculum and may be a good short-gap measure until there is space in the school of your choice ??

Perhaps you can look into the Yew Chung International School system. My 4 year old goes there and he is very happy. What is good about there is that they stress language: English, Mandarin and Cantonese. I'm primarily an English Speaker, my wife Cantonese, so we are able to encourage him with this issue. Although high academic standards, methods of teaching do not force teaching. Kids learn through play, interaction, investigation, activities, etc...
