I am currently in the process of trying to renovate my apartment and would like to hear from anyone who can recommend a good contractor or decorator for the job. Ability to speak english is obviously an important requirement.
Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. (It would help even more if you have personally dealt with the company and can recommend them )

There are many good local contractors who speak good English. Don't let the language marketing angle cause you from selecting a highly qualified professional at a reasonable price. Don't pay expat prices just because you're an expat, if you know what I mean. Allyou have to do is grab a Home Journal, contact a few of the profiled companies and pretty soon you'll be able to triangluate the right contractor.

There seems to be this notion that by hiring an expat contractor you're going to get honest, high quality work. This is a complete myth! From my observation most of the expat contractors have never handled a hammer prior to coming to Hong Kong. They're opportunists not there to provide you with a level of service you would expect, but to scam you as much as they can in one job. I got duped by a company from Mui Wo who happens to advertise on this site. Never again will I touch an expat contractor! My advice avoid them like the plague, there are plenty of good local contractors out there.
