My kid is 10 and he is taking an exam end of May. He seems unable to concentrate very well and that he lacks energy all the times. I heard that in the US, before exam some teenagers are taking Ritalin, if I spell it correctly, some kind of energy booster. I wonder if anyone can advise me whether there is something similar in Hong Kong and whether it is safe to put your kid on this kind of medication.

Definitely not. Ritalin is a stimulant and not to be taken casually. It's mainly used to treat people that have ADD/ADHD. There are also side effects that you have to watch out for.
Is your son eating healthy food? Getting enough sleep? Exercising? You may want to take your son to the doctor for an exam if he's always tired. Perhaps there is some underlying reason for this.
Good luck...Ritalin is not the answer, though.

Thanks kar. He's just not energetic but not always tired. I think I have to find a good doc and have his diet evaluated and everything.
After reading all the researches, I am convinced that parenting has no short cut.
Perhaps half a cup of tea or coffee will work. A little caffaine will not hurt I think.

A normal healthy 10 year old really shouldn't need stimulants like coffee to get through the day - like the other poster has said I'd have your son checked out by your GP.
I have noticed in Hong Kong that a lot of kids stay up quite late, personally I think many need a lot more sleep than they get.

A 10 year old should certainly not need coffee to boost their energy! How much sleep is he getting? A 10 year old should get 9-10 hours of sleep per night. This is the main reason why lots of kids (and adults!) in HK don't have any energy - they're sleep deprived all the time.

He gets into bed 9:30 and wakes up 7 everyday. I tried to put him to sleep at 8:30 by early dinner at 6:30. How's your kid's habit, guys?

By the way, does iron need to be prescribed by a GP? As overdoes will be dangerous right?

It's all my fault. I have, in a causal occasion, brought up results of some studies before my son that clever kids tend to need less sleep. I have the feeling that from then on, he doesn't want to sleep that much.

I just found out that the "yummy worms" he is taking has no iron. But he has about 2mg in his formular which constitutes about 30% of what he needs daily I think. He is also taking a lot of C on a daily basis which helps absorb iron.
The multivitamin I am taking only gives me 11% of what I need daily. As a woman, I think I need iron badly.

Did you take any IQ assessment for your son? Is he studying in mainstream local school or International School? Do you find any problem to follow his homework?
My son just swap to International School from local school as I found he sleeps too little because of study, unfortunately I found he is not so clever even he always doing the papers. Unfortunately, he was complained by the IS teacher that his cognitve problem or learning disability, they ask him to repeat. I am so distress to hear about this because I want my son learn happily but got such comment at the end. Is there any happy International School in HK? I think I need to find another one again.
