How do you get rid of weevils and stop the spread?

Dump everthing (or sift the weavils out and eat it) and don't buy anything else until you have cleaned out all the storage containers with hot soapy water and wiped over all the cupboards and shelves. Then when you buy new products transfer them to suitable containers when you bring them home (checking for any infestation) and make sure all your lids are closed. Some people swear by bay leaves scattered on the shelves.

Weevils hatch from eggs that are laaid in grain/flour/cereal or whatever. They do spread from one product to theother if not sealed properly. If you freeze your flour or whatever you are not using, it kills the eggs. The buggers chew through plastic bag to get at stuff!

Weevils are a tiny beetle type insects that lay eggs in the grain when it is still growing. Eggs hatch and all breaks loose in your flour or cereal, spaghetti etc.

Freezing your flour doesn't do anything to it (that I know of!) IT doesn't really happen in cold countries, but quite common in warmer climates. Maybe it is encouraging to see these things in your products - you know they haven't been nuked with gamma rays or other!

Also known as bol weavils.

Sorry ...boll weevils are those in cotton plant buds. Granary weevils are the ones that cause havoc in your grocery cupboard....freeze your stuff - it really works - especially the stuff that you don't use often. FPguy - you probably go through your dry goods very quickly being in the food industry, so you would not have seen this phenomena - very common though. They are not harmful if eaten accidently.

Well you've heard about them now FP. I have had an unused pack of pasta (newly bought)full of weevils - no holes in the packaging at all and nothing else in the cupboard or on the shelf infected with the little buggers. It happens - not often though, outside of tropics. They are tiny an sometimes you don't see them until youput the rice into the pot of water, then they come scuttling out of the rice grains.

I race through mnost of my food - just a bad pack of something, I guess.

FPguy: consider yourself lucky then. You lead a sheltered life.

Ness: my mother swore by bay leaves. I toss them in for good luck.. (prevention is better than cure). You think then it is an urban legend?

Ctdr: They even hit beans and stuff. I did not realise they chew through plastic though, I just assumed they were already trapped in the bags.

GT - I freeze all my flours and grains and they are never wet as FP suggests, when they come out - I use what I need and stick it back in the freezer.

Yup - they get in everywhere, but actually hatch in sealed packets of stuff, then break loose.

FP - where have you lived all this time that you have never heard of them - just curious.

Weevils have nothing to do with consumer hygenie. At home or at work. If you have read the posts, they are pests, that lay eggs in grains while the plants are still growing. The hygiene is not the fault of the consumer but the manufacturer, and the storage sites of the products in question. In COLDER climates this problem does not materialize as much as in WARMER climates.

You do not cook on the professional level, right?

No.. it means you are buying flour from a very good supplier who values his buisness. ;)

I've had them here in Hong Kong and I remember them from Australia as well, I don't think it's all that unusual.

I certainly don't believe it's anything to do with hygenie, our helper is a demon when it come to keeping the kitchen clean......

Definitely nothing to do with hygiene. Have never had them myself but my sister has and she is the Martha Stewart of kitchen pantries and storage. They spread through her pantry, even the stuff in tupperware and glass containers.... and she found the source which was a packet of rice infested at the store.... but they had already spread. It is common in Australia, no stigma attached regarding bad hygiene, just really annoying. They don't cause any disease, we always used to joke it was extra protein!!

Hi i cook for a living, and agree nothing you can do to stop them apart from the above, yes you can frezze flour etc, and no it does not happen in cooler climates, it also varies as well on the temp level of your cupboards and again from the supplies. I also bay leaves work as well as keeping a look out for them

Hey Hey...good idea bay leaves...also spearmint gum works well too...thank you Wrigley's, fresh mint will work but is a mess to clean up, so gum is great...leave it in the wrapper.

Common in the Western U.S.A. They are a nuisance and costly if your cupboard is "full". They also get into rice.

Happy cooking.

Wipe over shelves with citronella and use bay leaves to deter further infestation.
