We just got a large plant this morning delivered to our flat. When we got home tonight, noticed many ants crawling all over the sofa and the floor. We've never had an ant/insect problem so far as the flat is kept really clean. Can only assume it is coming from the plant although I don't see any crawling IN the plant soil.
Does anyone know how to deal with an ant problem? Is there some exterminant to spray onto the plant/soil? Or should I buy some type of ant trap and put them around the flat. I suspect that the ants are coming from the plant but I am not positive. Help! It's disgusting!!

I am having an ant problem also, i reckon it's just the wet weather and like Australia they are coming in side to stock up. I am a very tidy clean person and a 3 small pants and i know it's not the plants. What to do well i suppose you can spray but you'll need to find where they are coming into the house.

Put some salt and hot water on the ants street and corners of your Apartm., that's the best way without using chemicals. BUT, it makes only seens if we talk about the normal ants on the floor. They can fly, better use a spray or do it like Avia, kill them by hand.

I experienced flying ants last week but seemed that when they got indoors their wings fell off- lovely! and they were crawling everywhere. We did have the tiny sugar ants last year which were terrible to get rid of and in the end had to call in a pest control company many many times to try and get rid of them. We used Truly Pest

I had this same problem recently and got a pest company to come in last weekend. Be careful as apparently from April/May - October it is common to see these swarming flying ants. They are termites, they are reproductive and they are looking for new places to start their new colony. They are attracted to light and they need almost no space to enter your flat. They then look for quiet humid areas - eg bathrooms, the inside of door architraves, skirting boards, etc. They drop their wings and this is what I noticed first. The pest companies can check if there is any activity with a device called Terma Trak. Fortunately, my place is ok at the moment but worth getting your place checked out, especially if you've seen them inside.

I've never tried this before, let me know if it works...
Cut a clove of garlic along the path and they'll disappear.
Or cut 2 cloves of garlic and leave in water. Use this water to clean the floor.

Ok, there were suddenly no more ants crawling around the next day. The ones that appeared were definitely the ants with wings--but none were flying, only crawling all over the sofa and carpet. Maybe they had already shed the wings by the time we got home because there were wings all over the floor too.
I've bought the ant traps now so hopefully they will work. Don't want to call Pest Control because we have a two-year old boy and the chemicals could be harmful for him.
The problem is that I still have no idea of the source. Can't tell if they came from the plant or not.
