we are trying to determine what the cost of groceries and house hold goods are on a weekly basis for a family of 4. Would be interested to know "ball park" amounts for organic/imported groceries for a week - including cleaning aids, toiletries, water etc.
We live in the US and on average it can cost $200 a week +/-....

Just back from Canada and I figure that groceries are about triple the cost at GREAT, Olivers and City Super (premium shops in HK). I'd say Parknshop and Wellcome generally run about twice the price.
Grocery prices are a reflection of the much higher rents in HK.

I'd say we spend for three adults, one child, USD 250 per week on average, excluding alcohol. That's mostly park n shop, with the odd bit of olivers/city super.

Re Almanac's advice to shop in markets on Kowloon side: could you tell me which ones you use / which are best?

I spend around $2,500 a week for a family of 7 plus a cat. I was back in the UK in April and made a concious effort to compare prices, and was shocked at how many things were more expensive in the UK.

Thanks - I'm fine with paying whatever - I would rather eat good produce any day! I just want to be sensible about it! Now we just have to work out location. My husband just spent 4 days there taking a look around. I think it will be either Repulse Bay or Stanley - we have 2 1/2 year old twins - b/g - so I'm such a stroller Mum but given the magnitude of the hills/mountains I think the stroller may never see the outside! Any comments on Stanley vs Repulse Bay - my hubby said all new construction had very small b-rooms and older ones were a better size.

Cerne Abbas Giant, how do you rate the different organic veg services (Aussie Organics, etc.). In terms of price / quality / variety, which is best?

I've bought organic from all the stores here, Great/Olivers/CitiSuper/PnS, etc, and while Great has the widest selection, it is outrageously expensive. I've been ordering weekly shipments for several years from Organic Farms in NT, but I feel their selection and quality has declined lately. I've recently started with Aussie Organics and find their quality to be consistently decent and prices seem to be about one-half to two-thirds of Great's prices. One of the founders of Aussie Organics says they've had such a good response that they are expanding products beyond fruit and veggies and will soon start with organic meats and dairy, including milk(!). If they do milk, they will be the only outlet in HK for organic milk. I will be one happy customer.
Here's my last shipment for HK$388: 3 bananas, 6 kiwis, 7 mandarin oranges, 2 regular oranges, 3 apples, 3 pears, 6 tomatoes, 6 carrots, 4 potatoes (mix of red/white), 2 small broccoli heads, 1 cucumber, 1 red pepper, 1 zucchini, 1 ear of corn, 1 onion, 1/4 pumpkin.
yum.

Heyde, have you looked at properties in Discovery Bay? It is a 25min ferry ride from Central and a great place to live with children. There are so many other international families living in Discovery Bay and great places for children to play, i.e. playgroups, kindergarten, playgrounds, beach, etc.
