A topic in practical about a good bar for a woman to go alone (and not get picked up), made me think - what about places to eat when you are on your own? We all have to do this sometimes for lunch, and maybe for dinner on those late office nights when we need a break.
Local noodle restaurants are all good, as are take-away... was thinking of places you can sit and relax while eating
Here are a few I can think of:
Central/SoHo
Fringe Club - healthy lunch buffet
Mix, Kosmo, Pret, HK Baguette in LKF - wraps, sandwiches
Kyoto/Tokyo Joe - sushi bars
The French Crepe place in SoHo
Koshari - the Habibi Cafe

How about if a woman - recently moved to HK with husband - would like to go out on her own while her husband is away to get to know some people but not to pick up?

Unfortunately for DagDesert, a woman eating by herself as a major sign for men saying "come and pick me up" . The restaurant won't change that.
What you need to do is dress up very ugly (unwashed hair, glasses, spots, body hair) and reduce your chances of getting picked up

PopBites on Old Bailey Street has a great atmosphere for lunching alone with plenty of sitting areas including a large shared table and magazines/newspapers to read. Great music and staff too!
Eat Right Cafe on the esculator, just up from Hollywood Rd is another good one where you can read a mag/book/paper and not feel like a total nigel.
Agree with crj re Pret and Kosmo too! ps. Where is the french crepe place??

ummm graemecarter... a woman eating by herself is NOT a major sign for men to come and pick them up! AND your advice of going out dressed up "very ugly" to avoid getting picked up is just ridiculous, not to mention your descriptions. (glasses are not ugly thank you vm and some girls look great with unwashed hair) ;-P
