Maternity Insurance?

ORIGINAL POST

I am hoping to have a baby in HK next year. I would prefer to go to a private hospital.

Unfortunately, my health insurance won't cover any maternity costs at all.

We have thought about taking out a separate policy just for me to have the baby and be covered.

Any suggestions?

I'm not pregnant yet, won't be trying until next year, so should be fine with qualifying time periods.

Any information/experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

Allianz covers full maternity. It costs about 2500 - 3000 USD per year, and you need to get the policy 10 months before you conceive. Very good, covers everything including midwife, accupuncture, chinese medicine, etc... really great.

Contact Neil Raymond at Kwiksure (advertised on this site) - he can get you a 'chart' comparing all the different insurance options - be sure to tell him to include Allianz.

IHI is more expensive, but also covers everything and two children under the age of 10.

Good luck!!!

Hi Joanie

If all this sounds too costly, you might want to consider using a public hospital. I have had two children at Queen Mary's and the care was fantastic. There are no frills, but I did all my pre-natal check ups privately and just registered with QMH in week 30. Both deliveries cost $200. Can't beat that!

Good luck!

Thank you FOTH and pokfumum for your input.

Pokfumum, could I ask whether you speak Cantonese?

The language barrier is my major concern, rather than a lack of confidence in the care at public hospitals.

Unfortunately,my husband and I have had some very upsetting incidents due to language difficulties and/or cultural insensitivities.

Our doctor told us this would be much less of a problem at the private hospitals that are used to dealing with Westerners.

I delivered my son at a public hospital in Australia, and would be happy to go back.

I am trying to avoid the upheaval of taking him back to Australia for two or three months.

Thanks again.

I gave birth at Queen Mary too - no language problems (I don't speak Cantonese), but overall the birth wasn't the beautiful experience I'd have liked it to be, but still, the medical care for the baby was excellent. And really, it was virtually free, we're both well, and I'd probably do it again, as I can't quite bring myself to pay the obscene amounts required for a private hospital (or for those silly premiums). Of course if money wasn't an issue I'd be straight up to the Matilda.

Thanks geiboyi, that's pretty much summed my thoughts up too. It all depends on how much the premiums are, and Christian had sent me some info'. Cheers!
