Not all psychologists uses psychodynamic theory. There are many approaches, ie. Behavioural theory and approach for instance.

The main difference, is that psychiatrist can give out medication to 'help' out your issues

There are other differences between psychiatrist, psychologist and therapist. A psychiatrist will have a medical degree plus postgraduate qualifications (that's why they can prescribe medication). A psychologist should have a postgraduate qualification in psychology. A therapist - well, anyone can call themselves a therapist, so you need to be careful and check out their background.

Psychologist - with extensive therapy background. Some counsellors are good, but I would ask alot of questions about their clinical experience and background. I have several friends who have gone to Resource Counselling (look in HK mag for ad) in Central and have been very happy with the results (and the prices are geared to income)

Psychiatrists have a reputation for using pills for "problem solving" whereas a psychologist is more about letting you purge yourself of suppressed feelings of guilt etc.. Melanie Bryan of Owens & Trodd is a qualified psychologist and hypnotherapist. I don't know what she charges but I would guess she is expemsive.

There is a distinct difference between the two professions i.e. a psychiatrist is a medical practitional specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness whereas a psychologist tends to look at behaviour in a given context. Two very different professions and not one to confuse or even compare!

Judging from your very brief post a psychologist would seem to be the better option.

I cant recommend anyone in Hong Kong but I did go to see a psychiatrist at home for about two years. He can prescribe medication but it was up to me. I took meds for a while but they werent really for me. Mostly we just taked through my problems and where they came from - ie sh*tty past experiences. It really helped. I also went to see a counsellor for a time but I found the psychiatrist better. I think its just important to find someone you feel comfortable talking to - it took me some time to find that but it really helped overcome some hard stuff. good luck

Resource counseling in Central is good. They gear their fees to your income. If they feel that you need the additional support of medication, they will refer you to an appropriate doctor.
