Hi !,
Anyone else using newsgroups alot in HK ?.
Im using Hutchisson as ISP and got good speed
till now but recently seems they capped it.
Called and asked and they say no restrictions on NNTP traffic. Tried my Netvigator account in office and that works 'normal', i.e. fast so the problem is not with newshosting provider.
Anyway, anyone using, pls comment.

I use a paid service, have downloaded well over 2 Terrabytes in the last 10 months. Use HGC at home and Netvigator at work; tried Netvigator for download and that is normal speed (pretty much eliminates the possibility for problem being with News provider).
HGC is looking in to it but so far cant explain why it suddenly reduced to crawl. Do you use Hutchisson ?. No problems latelly ?.
Anyway; i got Powercom modem also at home from HGC; gonna connect that and see if any difference.

HGC used the be excellent... sucks that its messed up. Did not test the powercom yet from HGC.
Anyway; i do use binary so thats the problem (and why i need the extra bandwidth). Everything except nntp is ok. Used to get between 500-1000 KB/s in speed with 4 threads downloading. Now i get 4-5 KB/s... or there around. I have made sure its not router, computer etc; brought laptop from work that worked on Netvigator so i know its HGC. They still have not got back to me; still dont know what problem is (they insist nntp is in no way regulated).
Appreciate any help i could get; last resort i will switch to Netvigator. I know Netvigator is ok on nntp for now, but overall the speed is lower. If you want to do a traceroute from my newsgroup provider it can be done here;

Update on this if anyone else will search; had HGC technical staff over on Thursday. They confirmed not my internal setup problem (i.e. router, vfone, PC or simmilar; but i knew this allready). They also confirmed the lan from flat to building router box or whatever it is works as it should.
They further said they have had simmilar complaints allready (tech guys said, but when you call no-one admit anything) and they said problem is with them but not locally.
So, i'll continue complaining a bit more since they have been to my place now and seen problem. Last resort, switch to PCCW.

Thx Oman; it does not affect so much if not binary (however, since binaries are so big it is a pain). Each file i download is around 8-12 gb so speed is important. I know netvigator is slower since i use it at work but can surelly live with that if HGC cant get act together.
Anyway, i use Newshosting in US; good retention and not alot of corrupted files...
