I ended up buying cheap 42" plasma. 3 yr old technology but I did not spend 60 000 dollars, only 10 000. In 3 years the 60 000 set will be 3yr old technolgy, my set will will still be working fine (will not have burnt out screen yet) and I will have had another 50 000 for beer, DVD, and other toys.

Bring a DVD you know to the store and compare. Id still go with a Plasma if you are looking to pay 10-20k. If you are after high resolution, and willing to pay 40k it could be debatable but at 10-20k level its no competition for size/picture quality you get.
If you read up and wanna get the most for your money id recommend Chinese Club (i use Mongkok but they are in a few places), some paralell import models and some agent goods.

Call for plasma tv's to cost more
2007-05-15 HKT 09:07
Environmental campaigners in Britain have called for plasma televisions to be made more expensive to discourage consumers from buying them. The UK Energy Research Institute says the sleek, large-screen TVs use four times as much electricity as the older versions, a wastage it says contributes to global warming. The institute says the European Union should impose higher taxes and tighten regulations to force manufacturers to produce climate-friendly models.

Plasma's are cheaper in comparison to LCD, and have better "natural" colour. However, it is prone to burning and has less life. LCD images are sharper, better technology and i just bought myself a brand new Samsung LCD 40" for 13,000. Go to AV Life in Harbour City and ask for Louis. He is the best sales guy i have met, with lots of good advice and will not try and sell you the most expensive. He will listen to your requirements, and show you wahts suitable.

While my 42" Hitachi Plasma is just awesome, my next purchase will be LCD for sure. Will have to meet Louis in AV life HC as looking for a 50".
