Are you based in HK or GZ?
My son had the same experience as your son. GZ doctors gave us steroid creams. When it won't go away, we decided to take him to an allergologist. After doing the "skin test", we found out he was allergic to a lot of things, and after taking out those things from his environment/diet, all the eczema went away. We don't use steroid creams at all. Just natural oil based creams from the doctor too.
If you are interested, see Dr. Helen Chan, her number is: 852 2522 2302
and she is based in: Rm 1602A Central Building

My daughter had very bad eczema on her face only when she was little and it lasted 2 years. They got pretty bad at times. I took her to see quite a few doctors both here and in the U.S. I also have a good neighbor whose daughter also had various eczema. I bought so many different types of creams and did so much research. Here is what I know. There is no cure... Most of the children grow out of it by the time they are 1 or 2. Mine seemed to last forever.
3 years ago, steroid cream was the only solution. These days, doctors have a couple of non steroid creams. However, they don't work as well and you have to apply them for quite a long time. Personally I believe steroid cream is fine as long as you don't put a lot on. Unfortunately HK only sells those 1% cortizones which are too high for young children. I bought some 0.5% ones in the US which worked fine. On and off I used quite a bit to control the eczema. At the end of the day, my daughter grew out of it. As for regular moisturizing cream, Cetaphil (you can fine it at Watsons in Pacific Place) is quite good. I agree that aqueus cream is not that good.
Controlling certain types of food will help too. Keep the house moist by using a humidifier during dry days. I use it still as my daughter still has dry skill although not eczema. But it really depends on how serious the eczema is. For the serious type, steroid is the only solution.

My daughter used to have eczema on her face when she was around 6 months old. We tried several creams, but were not working very well. Sudocream is good for nappy rashes. For her face, we followed a traditional Chinese method which worked quite well, maybe you can try. We bought $20 dry chrysanthemum and honey suckle from a Chinese herbal shop. Put a small portion of both herbs, use boil water and brew in a tea pot. Use the essence to wash your son's foot. Anyway, it's for external use, shouldn't do much harm. Hope this helps.
P.S.
If you need help for Chinese names of the herbal stuff, I can send you the characters. Please let me know.

Was just wondering whether you would try ear accupuncture. Not the type with needles, but accupuncture with lasers. I've know many people, mainly chinese people who would use this method for all sorts of skin and other problems. I know they use this method especially for children and have worked wonders.
I'll try and dig up the address, but I do know that there is a hospital in TST that have volunteers who practice ear accupunture for a very minimum fee. They will also advise on what foods to avoid for problems like ezcema.

It is odd to have eczema on a single spot of the body. There are other skin-conditions that may mimic eczema. Probably best to see a specialist dermatologist to be diagnosed and treated ‘once and for all’

my son was diagnosed to be allergic to the following:
Soya
Eggs
Pork
Shrimps
when we took that out of his diet. And removed all soaps/detergents which were fragrance/soap based, all his skin rashes went away.

Growing up with eczema, myself, combined with rashes rashes caused by other chemicals such as laundry detergent, soap, and even lotion. I have tried all the steriod creams which only seem to work for a minimal period of time before the rashes would reoccur. About 5 years ago while hospitalized a nurse told me about 'Melaleuca' that makes lotions, cleaning solutions, and laudry detergent for those with sensitive skin and prone to skin rashes. I have been using their products since and my eczema has stopped and only during the humid summer months do I get an occassional heat rash.
Melaleuca has two stores here in Hong Kong one is in Windsor House in Causeway Bay, the other is in Pioneer Centre in Mong Kok.
The website is: www.melaleuca.com
Something which is not so good about this company is that it is 'memberhsip base' and if your a nonmember the products are expensive - so if you are interested in buying their products let me know as I am a member and am more than willing to share my number with anyone for no charge so you can pay the prices for products that members pay because their products are great and you actually only need a small amount for it to make a difference.

I'm also interested! About the treatment and costs. Also, was she allergic to certain foods and after the treatment she wasn't anymore?

just a few quick things...make sure you use cotton fabrics for things that touch your sensitive children; often polyester, wool, and things like acetate are problematic. Watch out for some medicines (over-the-counter or presecribed); cream-based ones can aggravate while ointment-based may feel and work better. Watch out for temperature changes or humidity changes; changes can bring on excema reactions. So can stress.

Isi - using anything different in your house/apartment? Different heating, dehumidifier, windows open/closed? Does the change coincide with the rainy weather? Possible clothing changes because of the weather changes? etc.? Just some thoughts of possible external variants/influences.
