Travelling baby - car seat

Need some advice - we're going back to France for a couple of weeks in Feb06 when baby'll turn one & am @ wits end re: car seat.

Previous trips weren't a problem as have got one of those 3-in-one strollers (moses basket & maxi-cosy which doubles up as car seats + normal hammac). However am afraid the stroller's car seat would be too small plus manufacturer says it's only for max 1.5hrs a day.

Anyone with ideas on how to deal with this ? Don't really want to check in the (big & bulky) car seat from here!

Are you hiring a car when you get there? Most car hire companies also hire out car seats?

Hi Suze

Yes we will be hiring a car but dear hubby will be using it to go to work while I'm left on my own with baby & public transport to visit friends/ex-colleagues (& shop:)) in various parts of Paris so pushing the stroller with one hand & carry car seat in the other isn't quite practical & I do like the idea of being able to hop into a cab as & when available.

But car seat from car hire company definitely sorts out the airport/central Paris trip - Tks

OK, so you need one for just cabs, have you thought of those seat belt things that you can get that are kind of like a harness that attach to seat belts in cars or do you think your little one will be too small?

Is this something like the infant seatbelt that they give you in aeroplanes ? Does it meet the international car safety standards ie accepted as an alternative to car seats ?

Do you know where I can get one - or at least the manufacturer's name as can get info from the net re: min size (baby's height/weight) plus retailers address..

We've been using a Joeysafe since ours was about 15 months. She's 2 and a half now and I still generally have her sit between my legs and run my seatbelt strap through the back of her harness. She's much more stable that way, especially around turns.

The Joeysafe is approved for car travel in the US, though I think there is a min/max child weight (the website should say). We use it loads (we're in loads of taxi's) because even though it's cumbersome, it is the only thing I know of that's safe and can pack easily into a bag.

The only other thing I would say about Joeysafe is that if you are thinking of ordering one, make sure they can deliver within your time constraints, ours took several weeks to come. You also might want some time on the front end for your child to get used to it. It's routine for our daughter now, but she didn't like getting into the thing in the beginning.

Happy travels.
