This is for my niece, who will be using it only to listen to music.
iPod Nano is so much smaller, but for a bit more money, she can store a lot more MP3s in the 30GB. What are the drawbacks, though?
Thanks for your inputs!

They serve completely different purposes...
The big drawback of the 30GB is its size - it is BIG and HEAVY. And don't consider the "video" anything more than a gimmick.
I love the Nano, because it is so small, and handy to carry. 4GB is plenty for me.
If your niece carrys a lot of things around with her - like many girls do - I'd say go for the big one. She probably won't mind lugging it around with her books and other things. Me, I just want something thin to put into my pocket, so I go with the Nano.

Thanks for replying, lowlight.
Would you happen to know if the iPod Video sucks a lot of battery juice? I know that the iPod Nano consumption is not abnormal. I have searched for a comparitive review, albeit not exhaustively, and come up with zilch.

According to sales reps (at Fortress) - Ipod Video gives you about 9 hrs of playback and 30 hours music playback - but I very much doubt that is the case. I found with my ipod (non-video, and older version) that I realistically got about 2/3 of what Apple stated - sometimes less.

Another thing to consider: I find I use my MP3 for mostly short spells and get a bit tired of hearing the same music every time I turn it on. I change shuffle every time but the same songs come up. Of course, I change content with my computer regularly but not every day! A large storage MAY give you more variety but you have to manage the tracks more, ie change the order or regularly change 'shuffle' or you could get very very bored with constant repetition. I prefer the smaller storage becaus eit does give me the chance to completely change the collection available.

If your neice listens to lots of music & has a large collection, I would recommend the 30GB version. It's not that large, about 30% bigger than a business card & much lighter than the previous versions.

I'm very happy with my Mini 4G. 30G is large and stores too much while Nano has an easy-to-be-damaged sreen problem.

Thank you all for the advice. I got her a 4GB Nano... for HK$1850 -- She's very thrilled with her new acquisition!
