I'm interested in this too! I've lived in HK for 3 years and when I first got here I searched and searched for sourdough - they just don't have anything like the real thing here. I tried Great, Olivers, Mushroom Bakery and Ali Oli in Sai Kung. Nothing.

Let us know if you've found it!

hello, belle, thanks for your feedback though it seems still desparate to find good sourdough here in hong kong!!! but i've just heard that a new shop has just established to sell online where we can find some real authentic french style sourdough breads...can order online with delivery included, but it's said that the online order form is still pending to work properly, but we can still order through telephone. the name of the supplier is tufei painpain and there should be a website with the same name! let's try it out and see!

One place you might try in Central is Gourmet Kitchen. They've been around for years on Staunton but have recently moved down to #27 Peel St.

They are of all things... an Italian and British-style Chinese restaurant.

The owner is a keen baker and out of their new location they do artisan style baking. That is... baking using all natural ingredients, no additives and no preservatives. The bread is prepared by hand and baked in small batches. The last I was in there they had several different kinds of loaves.

Rye loaf, Flax Seed loaf, Sprouted Wheat loaf and Italian Olive Bread.

I think it's pretty much whatever the owner feels like baking that week. I bought a loaf of Sprouted wheat and it was the real deal. I had a few slices of the Italian Olive loaf with a plate of pasta and it was tasty. The price is easy as well.

Give 'em a try.

just a quick update for those of you who love Sourdough....

Gourmet Kitchen (which I noted the address above) now does sourdough!

I stopped in this week and they had two different kinds.

1) Pane Coi Sante

-an italian style bread with raisins and walnuts

2) Whole Wheat Epi's

- a whole wheat sourdough.

Both are tangy just like a good sourdough should be. The owner/chef there uses his own sourdough starter and does all the baking work himself.

Work a taste if you're craving sourdough.

I am from California and also crave good sourdough. I have found some that is as good as San Francisco at the Great store in the basement of Pacific Place. It is fresh and the crust is really chewy. I buy a loaf and keep it in the freezer. Go now and you will not be disappointed

On Zusa's recommendation, I have just been to the Gourmet Kitchen to get some sourdough (which I love and crave)have toasted it up with butter and vegemite (the best way to have it!) and may I say that it is DELICIOUS!

Thanks for the recommendation!...proper bread at last!

Try sourdough at Pumpernickel, cozy coffee shop which serves nice coffe, pasta and house -baked breads. There're several shops in HK side. I usually buy them @ causeway bay shop, cleverland street. Althouth it is in crowdy causeway bay but it is like a hidden hideaway.
