Does anyone have any feedback on having the coil fitted, any side effects, any positives, and negatives....

I am not an expert, but I have had a coil for the past few years with minimal side-effects (some cramping). For me it's better than most contraceptives because it doesn't mess up your hormonal balance, or require you to remember to take a pill every day. Getting it fitted was only as uncomfortable as a normal examination.

I just got the hormonal Mirena IUD and love it. Have a friend who is on her 3rd coil and she swears by them.
Sometimes, insertion is painful and some places may not do if you do not have kids already. (No problems in HK though for that). With the hormonal coils, be prepared for possible side effects like weight gain and oily skin and cramps.

I'm on my third coil (the second that I've had fitted at the HK Family Planning Assoc. on Henessey Rd) and I would highly recommend it. Can't remember the exact cost, but for the basic one (no hormones) I paid less than $200 and I couldn't have wished for better care. The only negative experience I had was having the last one removed...the strings had worked themselves too far up (this happened to a friend too, so I think it's quite common) and after going for a scan to ascertain its position it was a pretty uncomfortable procedure to get the thing out! I didn't hesitate to have the new one fitted though. Hope this helps you decide.

There are two types of IUDs... 1 had the copper wire and the second used the hormones (Mirena is the only one currently on the market). The usual symptoms for the copper one (this is a generic IUD) are heavy bleeding. The second is usually the opposite- your periods become very light and for about half of the people stop. The hormone dosage is so low that you can breastfeed with it in. It's also so low that oily skin and weight gain are not common- even for those people that experienced it on the pill. I don't know about the cost where you are but the difference is only for the actual device itself and that the copper one can be left in while the mirena should be changed every 5 years.
FYI- for the woman who had the c-sections and than expereinced all the pain having them put it. The reason it is recommended to have the iud/coils inserted soon after childbirth is the cervix is still slightly open, thus easing insertion. If you had a c-section, yours never was and so it was like inserting the iud into someone who had never had kids. The doctor should have taken that into account and given you pain medication to take before hand.
