Any good co'ed boarding schools in Aust? (sydney)

There is a co-ed boarding school called Barker in the North western suburbs of Sydney - very expensive though. They are only co-ed from year 10. There are other excellent single sex boarding schools in Australia as well -may want to keep your options open on that.

You may find you will be in year 11 when you start the HSC in NSW - just an age thing - they don't have year 13 in Australia. ESF starts their high school a year earlier than Australian schools.

ESF have 6 years of primary school, and 7 of high school, Australia has 7 primary school years and 6 high school years.

You could rent an apartment and go to school - a few kids from OS do that - however, I think you will find that is more expensive than boarding. I have a son at boarding school in Sydney, it costs as much if not less for him to board, than for him to live at home, and I know he is eating right (and as much as he wants to eat), being transported to and from his sport, having tutors help him, having clean clothes and sheets each day and having friends and adults around all the time.

There is alot of work involved in living by yourself, which may be something you don't want to have to learn and study at the same time -especially if you have a maid in HK - may find it a lot more difficult than you think.

You also need to look at other options in HK before you take this big jump. Why not an International school instead of ESF - GSIS? AISHK? FIS? CIS? Although their fees are higher than ESF and schools in Australia, by the time you take into account airfares and other things, it works out to be pretty similar.

Why do you want to go to Australian schools? I think you have to answer that question first before you start moving OS. Has it got anything to do with school or is it you wanting to leave home now?

I have no clue about living costs in Sydney becasue I live in HK and you will have to speak to the schools you are looking at to find out more info.

I would still encourage you to look at International schools in HK first.

You should also consider finding a school that teaches the IB ( I know that SCECGS Redlands in Sydney does and it takes boarders). The IB is an internationally recoqnised qualification which will put you in a much stronger position should you want to study for a degree outside of Australia. Going into Year 11 would be a waste of time for you - believe it or not your ESF education puts you a year ahead academically.

Kurtz, I have two books you are welcome to borrow if you like.. we live in the south side so perhaps you are nearby and could drop by and pick them up if you are serious about attending school in Australia.

They are Choosing a School for your child - NSW www.schoolchoice.com.au

and

2005 Guid to Schools - comprehensive listing of NSW, ACT Secondary schools plus NSW, ACT Victorian and Queensland boarding Schools.

They both have comprehensive articles about attending school in NSW and all the schools, details contacts, prices and websites. There are a lot of schools that now offer IB... the best place to find out about that is to go through the IB people and they will tell you... I had a link somewhere but not sure where now. PM me if you want to arrange to borrow the books.

Kurtz,

It is possible to study at one of the many excellent government school as an oveseas student. You will pay fees though I think. Overseas students who want to study at a government school in NSW should contact the Intenrational Student Centre at the NSW department of Education and Training

There are various options available regarding accomodation including home stay - where you stay with a family or a relative of yours but they must be over the age of 21. Cost of homestay is usually between 200 -270 aussie a week (exchange rate about 5.7 with HK) there are private independent companies that arrange these homestays. The NSW department of Education and Training requires all students under the age of 18 years to have a guardian or carer. Becase of this the accomodation choices are limited to

living with relatives

liveing with a homestay family

living at boarding school

Thanks a Bunch guys

Dear Kurtz,

I meet one of the school representatives which Ness introduced, NSW Govn't school today. I got some information about the australia high school. THere are other alternatives, such as foundation program. Just one year time, and then you could get into the university year 1.

SIS provided you with enough distractions?? Isn't it your responsibility to refraim from being distracted? The more you write Kurtz, the more i see you thinking that you would do better somewhere else - that it is the environments fault that you are not achieving. I am sure there are people in SIS that are achieving, what are they doing that is different to you? Actually doing the work? Listening in class, planning their study time and prioritising their work and play so they have a balance? Asking for help from the teachers who I am sure are as qualified and dedicated to the task as teachers in a co-ed boarding school (teachers are not usually in the job for the money...)

Yes some schools are better than others, but my experiences as a teacher and a parent - the school can only do so much, it is up to the individual to take responsibility to achieve, to take hold of the opportunities that each day brings. I think if you changed your application then you may see an improvement in yourself.

I totally agree with dimac4.It has nothing to do woth the school that you have been distracted. I have children at SIS and they are doing brilliantly. What makes you think that by going to OZ and another school all will be well. You don't just want to go to Australia to live....do you??
