Baby carriers for the summer

Does anyone have suggestions for baby carriers/slings for the hot weather? I have Babt Bjorn and Mayawrap but find both of them a bit warm for the summer.

I am a sling addict and researched this a lot! The lightest weight sling I can find is the Organic Cotton Mesh by http://www.taylormadeslings.com - delivered fast to HK too!

There are other styles of carriers that might be cooler, but I like slings.

until how many weeks old or months til you can use a sling? Isn't it heavy on the shoulder? compared to a carrier?

Personally, I think slings are easier and more comfortable than the Baby Bjorn. You can hold a baby up to toddler in a sling - there are different carrying positions.

I see so many parents of toddlers carrying their children when they get too tired to walk. A sling is small enough to keep in your bag and have it 'help' you carry the child.

When worn properly the weight is more evenly distributed on the back, and really quite comfy.

It takes a bit of getting used to, but I love that baby can face in, face out, lay down and sleep - all without having to take off the sling.

It is also possible to breast feed in the sling and use the 'tail' to cover up. I did this the other day in pacific coffee. When I finished, the people sitting next to me were shocked to find I had a baby! They didn't even notice!

There is a great site that has a huge amount of info on slings. http://www.thebabywearer.com

Baby Bjorn AIR is the summer one. We bought one for our bub, its very light and not as thick and padded like the original. We bought ours at B2B

Personnally, I use a Moby wrap. I like it because the fabric is really breathable - 100% cotton - and really comfortable.

As I'm selling them, you may want to go on http://www.thebabywearer.com to have opinion of other mamas ;)

Maybe this would work.

I was thinking of ordering one myself.

If you google "solarveil sling", then several sites pop up.

I have a solarveil sling from TaylorMadeSlings - it is very good, but I only like it for the water or if we are out in the sun, not for every day use. I debated about getting the solarveil pouch insted, but i think the 'tail' is good for extra sun protection.

I use their light weight organic cotton mesh sling for most days - it is the coolest I have found.

Silvieng, what is the moby wrap like - I have considered one of these but think they could be quite hot in summer as they cover so much of your body. I walk a lot, even in hot weather!

I bought it because I think that they are really breathable so not hot at all. If you want, we can meet up so that I can show you how it works.

Just email me : sylvie@nappypooh.com, it'd be easier as I don't come often here ;-)

Ooops... I saw too late that you are in China... Well, it is jersey fabric, so it is kind of like a tee-shirt actually. and now that Maylie is 1 year old , so seating well, I don't put her arms/shoulders under the traps so she is less crunch on me and we exchange less heat ;-)

It's really not easy writing it all like this :-D But well, you can always write to me if you want more details.

Hi - i use the ergo with my 9.5 kilo baby and we looooove it. I usually have her on my back (it can be worn front or side as well.) It can get fairly warm in summer as she gets a lot of body heat from the wearer.

i also have an ergo and my daughter must weight something above 10kg now.

to feel less hot, carry your baby on your hips!

crj and other sling fans - do you still swear by the Taylor Made Slings Organic Cotton Mesh? Is the weight spread over the back, cannot figure it out from the website. Did you get yours from Singapore or the US?

I am looking for something for a summer baby and cannot imagine the heat for wither of us using my BB Active Fit. The Air version does not give the same back support either.

How is the Ergo with newborns?

Hi

Yes, I have 4 slings... urm... I guess I should sell the others as I pretty much only use the Taylor Made...

There are others that are more comfortable because the shoulder is thicker, but it is the COOLEST for the heat and humidity in HK, and decently comfortable.

I am also going to make a 'wrap' one of these days, just get some fabric in Western Market and get it sewn in WWH, but I haven't done it yet. I know a wrap will be warmer, but it will more evenly distribute the weight on both shoulders and back.

Hope that helps.

To crj: how does Tailor Made one differ from the Mayawrap? Just wish to do some comparison.

I have used a baby hawk mai tai, baby biorn, an oopa sling, mountain co-op hiking backpack and a moby wrap. My little boy is now one and a half and I still use the sling and mai tai on occasion. My sholder does get sore if I wear him for more than a short period of time (he's over 20 lbs). I used my sling a lot last summer. Definatly cooler than all of the others I own. It was very comfortable when my guy was smaller and very easy to discretley breast feed in. Solar veil slings are great for water, but because of the stretch in the fabric, they are not suppose to support a heavier babys weight as well as a cotton one. Also, you need to adjust them a lot because the fabric will slip in the ring. I always wanted a hotsling (pouch), but I've read that sizing them correctly is very important (and can be a bit finiky).

The Taylor Made and Maya Wrap are similar design, the main difference is the fabric - I find the mesh taylor made cooler than the thicker maya wrap fabric...

Hope that helps.

Since I already have a Bjorn, I'm more inclined to buy a sling/ wrap myself. So I'm considering Taylor Made/ Maya wrap OR Moby/ Hotsling. The former ones look easier to handle for first time sling user, but am a bit concerned about the rings - would they put any pressure on the shoulder or the milk ducts at all? And for the latter ones, they look nice but not sure if I can handle that well (the Moby one doesn't look too easy).

Slings are GREAT for breast feeding!!

I even fed my newborn walking in central one day, and nobody knew! ha ha

And you can use the 'tail' to cover yourself, so they are really perfect for feeding.

crj, thanks for the great advice on slings. I have been thinking of getting one as my little boy is getting too heavy to be carried and I find his pram too inconvenient.

How difficult is it to use the sling for the first time?

Nitcher, a wrap definatly has a more difficult learning curve than a sling. There are a couple of tricks to using a sling, but all in all they are quite simple to use. The ring should be located about where you would put a corsage. I prefer a sling with big pleates at the sholder, this will give you a wider fabric with a wider spread accross your back (better weight distrabution).

Something like a hotsling does look really easy to use, you just need to make sure the sizing is right.

Wow! Thank you all! Looks like I have a lot of practice ahead of me.

Agree with Germaine, pram is too inconvenient in HK.... I can foresee I still have lots of chances to carry him even when he starts learning to walk. I'd also like to know how difficult it is to use the sling for the first time. I read the instructions it seems there are lots of ways to carry.

emk - sling with big pleates: are you referring to those used by Indonesian domestic helper? My helper has that. Looks like it's very versatile and convenient.

Anyone ever tried a Hotsling?

I got a native baby sling carrier off of ebay. the seller i bought from shipped to china and i got it within a week. most awesome.

The lady who sells them is a stay at home mom who sells the slings and other things so she can stay at home with her children. Most awesome. She carries different slings too.

all sounds great. I would soon be a sling first timer, my biggest worry (or I may be just being paranoid) is safety! How do I ensure that my little one is secure in that little "kangaroo bag"? Is there a trick to give me the assurance that he is not going to fall out of his bag?

I finally bought a mayawrap from LLL yesterday. It does need some practices on... esp coz baby is already 6 months old. He keeps moving a lot when I tried carrying him on a hip position. Still yet to figure out how he can breastfeed in there. Will check out the instruction DVD that comes along with the wrap for more tips.

In the past week, I saw two friends using the baby sling. I asked both to demonstrate and their babies (12 months + 15 months) slipped into the sling VERY easily. The babies just "knew" what to expect and were very co-operative so the mummies had no problems putting them in. The whol process took less than a minute and a lot faster than my baby bjorn. When they got tired, they just adjusted the ring (putting it slightly downwards from the corsage to the arm (where we get our jabs)) and then the weight's off your back. When baby's asleep (from a side sitting position), you just have to put baby's legs together gently and it's in a sleeping position except you are not carrying the baby, the sling is. Soooo cool!!

Anyway I've borrowed from a friend and while my sling does not sit "properly" like theirs do, it's a godsent. My toddler is MUCH bigger than theirs and her legs are sooo long so it's a bit more of a struggle trying to get her inside but once she's in, it's superb. And the best thing is, I don't have a bulky stroller to carry or a bulky baby bjorn. I just have a piece of cloth with two small rings and it fits right inside my handbag.

My toddler loves it too because she's much closer to mummy (in terms of body contact) and because I have my hands free, I can hug her, stroke her hair etc instead of resting it on her bottom like I used to.

I didn't watch the DVD (I know I should)...but it's just easier and quicker when shown what to do by another mummy using it.

Germaine WS, I was paranoid as well. I told my friend that my baby's heavier and may just slip out of it. However, there is NO chance for this to happen because once on the sling, the baby's bottom holds the weight for the sling and it fastens it securely around you. Unless I lift her up and then remove the cloth away from her bottom, I don't know how she would fall out ;-)
