Infant Potty Training / Elimination Communication

Ok, I know this thread is going to result in many replies saying "this is too young" "not developmently ready" etc...

But, I want to know if anybody practices:

Infant Potty Training

Emilination Communication

Most 'grandmother' age generation women in Asia seem to know about this, and did it for their babies.

Our maid is doing it with our son, and we are in full support. It makes our lives so much easier that he 'poos' to a schedule. He seems more comfortable with it as well.

Basically, we keep track of when he poos. For example, every morning. So he goes on the changing table and we stand over him saying 'ooo-oooo' and he poos. It takes a lot of patience, sometimes it is fast, other times 20 minutes.

Of course, he still poos in his nappy - but at nappy changed we 'ooo-ooo' and usually more comes out.

Does anyone else do this?

Do your maids do it for you?

Did your mother/grandmother do it?

Any success stories?

Not me - I'm too lazy and prefer that I be able to explain to my daughter what she needs to do. (she's just starting now at age 2 and she's basically training herself. I keep want her to wait, but she's figured out that she can rip off her diaper and sit on the toilet.)

I watched my friend do it - to great success. She was sticking her son on the pot from about 4 months and he was doing all his "big jobs" there. He was completely diaper free only after 2 years though - although he was regularly using the toilet for his big jobs. She and her maid were the ones who did it for him.

In Korea, early potty training is considered normal. Most of my friends have put their kids on the potty from a young age, but I notice that these days more mothers are opting NOT to do it this way and are waiting until their child is old enough to explain it to them. Only one child in a class of 10 is potty trained in my daughter's school. (one month older than my daughter.) His mother was training him from about 10 months old.

THANK GOD FOR THIS THREAD, i thought i was the only crazy one who did it!!!!

when he was breastfed for his first week, he pooed during/after every feed. when we switched to formula, he pooed less and didn't go for more than 24 hours at times. so what we did was feed him more water and when we know it's been quite awhile since the last poo, during nappy change, we make poo poo sounds and he makes the most hilarious facial expressions as he poos it all out. it's like he needs cheerleading team to poo...my mom will make the sounds, i'll hold his hands, etc...and no, it's never hard stools, always nice, soft logs.

for the last 4 weeks or so, it's been pretty much on schedule, every morning during his 7am feed, he starts kicking and wriggling, sometimes farting - i'll then remove his nappy, hold him up a little and he now starts making the poo poo noises himself and out they come. but of course if it doesn't happen after a few minutes sometimes, i don't force the issue. i'll just wait until his next feed and try again. it usually happens eventually. my husband initially thought i was crazy, but when he sees that our son is more comfortable after the poo, he's ok with it.

yes, my mom and grandma think it's an excellent idea to poo him every morning because they think it'll make things easier when the real potty training starts. we'll see how it goes!!

oh yah, just to add...i personally prefer him to poo on his own accord - part of me fears that he'll get so used to me helping him that he can't do it in preschool next time if there's an emergency without mommy going oooooooo!

but because formula fed babies poo alot more and get constipated easily, i have no choice. and it gives me a peace of mind that h'es not going to wake up in the middle of the night to do the big job...we used to have to go oooooo at 3am in the morning!

Wheelymate - what noise do you make that your baby can repeat it?

My husband said the funniest thing... he is going to be a teenager and someone will say 'ooo-ooo' and he's gonna ooo-ooo

actually it's more "uh..uh..uh" than "oooooo"...so when i lift him up slightly these days, he starts making that sound and other little grunts/straining noises. and the thing is he poos only if lifted up slightly (sort of like an imaginary potty), on his back if i make the poo noise he thinks i'm playing with him and laughs!

I just wanted to follow up.

Baby is now 8 months old. Since 7 Months he can poo in the toilet.

YES, it is parent training more than baby training.

BUT, he makes his poo face and noise, and we put him on a baby seat over the toilet and plop plop plop he poos!

This happens 3-5 times a day.

He still poos in his nappy too.

Next step is to get him to let us know more in advance :)

impressive! and also the fact that he poos 3-5 times a day!

i need to buy a potty or a baby seat too....because bub doesn't poo in nappy, only when i take his nappy off (taking his fart cues) and hold him up a little. now that he is more than 8kg at 6 months, it's very uncomfortable to hold him this way for too long.

Wheelymate - need your help.

We are having a 'potty pause' or 'potty strike'

Our baby is now almost 14 months old.

We have been doing Elimination Training since about 6 weeks old.

Since 7 months he has been poo-ing on the toilet.

Until 2 weeks ago, this was going so great. He would poo 4 x day, always at the same time (after each meal and before bed) and always on the toilet.

Maybe twice a week he would poo in his nappy.

We were thrilled it was going so well, and he even would poo on the toilet when we went out - we would just sit him on the edge of a big toilet and hold him. He even started to say 'poo-poo'.

BUT, the past two weeks, we have had a lot of changes in the house. The maid left, we got a new maid, then she left and now we have no maid so just me (and some part time help) until new maid starts.

He has adjusted fine to the part time help and loves playing with them - but he does not poo on the potty anymore.

Now he only poo's on the potty ONCE a day, after dinner, before bath. The other times during the day he does not want to poo on the potty and has been poo-ing in his nappy.

Often during his naps and he wakes up miserable. I try to put him on the potty before the nap, but he won't. And after the nap is too late.

There are two reasons I see for this:

1. The change of maids has upset him and he is unsettled.

2. Because there is no full time maid I have been using disposable nappies (we usually use cloth) the past two weeks.

And maybe a third reason, his diet changing?

Obviously, we hope it gets better when we have the new maid and the routine gets back to normal. But then the newborn will arrive and that could effect things too....

Have you had any experience with 'potty pauses' or 'potty strikes' if so, what advise/suggestions do you have?

Thanks

oh man, i forgot totally about this thread!!

i am afraid i won't be much help here. he used to never poo unless he had helped but at about 8 months (don't know if it's all the solids), he no longer held back - he sometimes even poos thrice in the morning!

i was only too relieved that he would poo on his own like this without having me to carry him in a potty position (toooooo heavy) and go uh uh....:P

so since then, we've kind of left whatever potty training plans we have aside for the time being.

sounds like you have many changes going on so you might just have to play by ear as you go along? have to say though, does he usually have a meal before his nap...maybe cut out the fruits or any windy foods?

so sorry i'm useless with the help here!!
