There seem to be plenty of alternatives here. Anyone care to give their recommendations for the top of the bunch?

If we're talking Indian (rather than Thai etc), Bombay Dreams. Or if you need a more scenic setting, the Indian food at Cafe Deco on the Peak isn't bad. Another option is Jashan.

Aqamemmon - It depends on each individuals taste therefore the debate on which restaurant to put the finger for the best curry will always be contentious.
It is a known fact that Indian restaurants use generous doses of baking soda in their preparations to 'fill-up' the tummies as they serve very small portions. It is interesting how the government departments have not been informed of such malpractices.
My take on the best curry is the Ho-Hin Restaurant in Sai Wan Ho on Kings Road which is dead opposite to Tai On Building. Ironically, it is run by a Chinese couple but unlike other INdian chefs/cooks/owners, they INSIST on using freshly ground ingredients. Try their LAMB ROGAN JOSH with Garlic Naan. IMHO, no other Indian restaurant can beat their curries.

Agamemnon - a few clarifications :
* I have written about Indian restaurants in HK context, who tend to use BS (baking soda). NOT about I.Rs in 5 continents.
* I never knew majority of IRs in HK were run by Pakistanis. Need to refresh my knowledge on Curry Pot/Bombay Dreams/Viceroy/JoJo/Veda et al.
* If the restaurants in HK are indeed run by Pakis, they have full rights to pronounce and underline in their promos that their food is Paki/Moghlai and so forth. To hide behind popular fare (Indian) in itself is contradictory to the 'contract of sale'.
* Take my humble and polite advice, if you haven't tasted REAL Indian food (with multiple cuisines from all over the country - Goanese/Gujrati/Souht Indian/Assamese/Deccan/Marvari/Bhojpuri), then there's no point in concluding on the basis of which side of the border you side upon.

"And by all accounts, Indians included, I'm lucky I haven;t tasted REAL Indian food".
What can I say Agamemnon, MOST Indian's would pity you for including them in your distaste for anything Indian (be it inclusion of Asiaxpat Indian site or your puerile banality of Indian food).
Of course, I'd take your comments in stride but stop it would be better if you stop flaming this thread with your insinuations.
I'd treat you to a sweaty Thai curry in San Po Kong if you take up that offer.

Jbebeb - is this the same Shaffis who used to have his mess on the British Defence premises on Route Twisk near Tai Mo Shan? If it is the same guy, I'd rate him amongst the top-5 !

Guys as much as I'd hate to break up this delightful exchange, surely you're both joking when you suggest "India is not the best place to eat Indian food". That makes as much sense as saying "Italy is not the best for Italian, or France for French" ... you get my drift. Not sure what Indians youve come in contact with and what traumas theyve left behind in their motherland, but take it from another native, the food in India is pretty hard to equal both in terms of its variety as well as its gastronomic excellence. Enough said.
