I have always tipped the shampoo person, but not the hairdresser. Like I don't tip a manager in a restaurant. How's it here in HK? Do you tip the hairdresser and if so how much?
Thanks

Been curious about this also. How much do you tip the shampoo person?

I usually tip the Hairdresser HK$50 and ask him to give some to the shampoo person.

I tipped the shampoo boy $20. but didn't tip the hairdresser, coz I had a haircut and treatment and it was over $900, so thought that was enough!! haha

I suspect I tip too much -- I tip the shampoo person $20, the colourist $50 and the stylist $50.

Foolonahill,
Well said! That's why I don't tip the hairdresser either, but the shampoo person, yes, as they are paid so badly.

I use to tip my hairdresser, however, the salon has raised their prices about 30% in the last few years.
My haircut costs more than twice the amount I pay in Canada ($800HK). I figure, why do I need to tip anymore. However, I do tip the person who washes my hair and the tea lady.

I tip the shampoo person and the hairdresser 20$ each, unless of course the hairdresser is the owner of the salon. I think the high prices for haircuts have much to do with the high rents paid by all businesses in HK -- I may be mistaken, but I always thought that the high price of medical consultations and other services was also linked to high commercial rents.

My doctor charges $300 for a consultation and my hairdresser $650 for a cut/blowdry!!! Now that doesn't make any sense.

I use to tip the shampoo person directly, they told me the saloon pays them a minimal they just get HK$5.00 per head... where they are charging the customers HK$500 per head for haircut..

I tip my stylist $ 40.00-$ 50.00 if the haircut was "specially good", and he put in alot of thought for me. I also tip the shampoo person if she/he did some extra like a good head massage, or was attentive to my face getting wet during the shampoo, or my ears had water going in...
basically, tip when you feel the service was "extra" satisfactory. When they are "JUST doing their job"... tipping would encourage future "same" old level of service!
It works too, next time I go, they remember everything that I prefer, from where I want to sit, what I want to drink, how I like the water temperature, and what products I like to use...
That's what I call "personalized" service.
I feel my $50.00 extra went a long way.....

Is there a difference for this between women and men? As a guy, in Canada I would tip to round it to $15 CND. Here, after so many poor haircuts at around $50-100, I am now paying almost $200 HKD to get my haircut with no shampoo, just a rinse.
$200 seems more than enough for a 25 minute cut and style, yes the stylist is really good, pays attention to details, but still, price is high to begin with.
Though it did take me more than a year of different shops to find this one, as the quality of stylists/barbers seems very poor in HK.
