Newborn outfits

What did your baby wear going home from the hospital and in the first few weeks? I have been given lots of onesies, but I heard that a top-and-bottom set is most appropriate for the first few weeks since the belly button may not have healed yet. Is this true?

i found onesies a pain for the 1st few weeks because:

1) some newborns hate having anything over their heads

2) at night, it's really troublesome doing all the unbuttoning when you're half awake and still have to clean off icky poo.

so aafter a few days, i bought cheap cotton button down shirts which were much easier....but once my bub grew bigger and night feeds reduced, onesies were better.

I found wrap around clothes the easiest hated pulling clothes over my babies head at first, took to long and felt like I was hurting him, some times would use a top and bottom but would find the bottom would actually rub more so on the cord,

We used 'kimono tops' with velcro or ties from Mothercare, they have them at WingOn as well.

We also used onesies - our baby didn't mind having them over his head, and we found that the nappy kept the onesie off his belly button more efficiently than the kimono tops. hard to explain, but the nappy 'lifts' the onesie off the baby at the right place.

For sleeping, we swaddled, and for daytime he wore these 'dresses' - long dress thing with elastic at the bottom, long sleeves with 'folds' at the end that went over his hands so he couldn't scratch his face (the mittens always fell off!).

We never bother with bottoms - that is what the nappy is!

We use nighties at night - don't need to take them off to change the nappy, and they don't go over the head. Don't know if you can get them in HK. And for day we mainly use just singlets with a nappy, no bottom. But then we don't use the aircon much so our flat is always warm. When we're out I just take a baby wrap to keep him warm in the aircon. We also have some short sleeve/no leg bodysuits which I like for both day and night.

Any recommendations on which brand should I get for a swaddle wrap/ blanket when taking baby home from hospital? Staff at mothercare highly recommend the miracle blanket. How about grobags and swaddleme wraps? Or should I get a blanket with a hood while carrying around?

We didn't swaddle (could never get it to work) and used grobags from the start up to about a year old (real Grobags up to 6 months and then got some thin ones made in Shenzhen). I think grobags are perfect for small babies - saves faffing with bedding.

Does one fabric/ material fits all? My baby is due in Oct. Probably will get a bit cooler from then onwards. Does the grobag or any of those wraps function as a blanket in bed too? Or should I get a fleece one? I'm always worried about what I should prepare for the little one when approaching winter...

grobags are the best.....babies will get out of their swaddles eventually.
